does cleaning a gun when a young lady's suitor show up really work?

HAHHAHA. i dont know when i became the family's "muscle". my wife's young cousin. very very cute. affluent family is in taiwan. they sent the kids here to finish up college, and start a new life. well, the oldest cousin got the typical college job, and met a guy. the dude is undocumented. she is fully legit with a green card. they are moving in together, and soon to be married (i heard january!!).

they want me to talk to him to find out if is is honorable. wtf? not even my cousin! i am protective of all the young ladies in my new extended family, but this girl reminds me of ...well..ME! hot headed and head strong..i dont think there is any turning her.

i hope she is on birth control. her dad is about to turn into a chain smoking, alcoholic worrying about this mess.

i am a total cynic. she tells me stories about him, and i can tell he is lying. but she believes him. example. he says his family is rich back in mexico..but he sends his mom $300 per month. he gave her a "family heirloom" that has his name on it. he said it was his grandma's and has been in the family for many years..yea whatever. he says he has $150k ready to buy a home, but he lives in a studio with three other guys...

lord, i hope i never have any daughters. at least not any good looking ones.

i got distracted. family wants me to invite him over for dinner..

have guns and cleaning supplies out.. hahahha.

I think you need to take HER out for a few beers and conversation.

Call Mike and hire him for a background check.

Brando 10-21-2010 04:50 PM

The cleaning... not so much.

Carrying... now there ya go!

legion 10-21-2010 04:50 PM

With this guy, it sounds like you'd just be showing him what you have that's worth stealing...

masraum 10-21-2010 04:55 PM

Wow, yeah, that sucks. Sorry that you have to deal with it.

I hope for your sake, hers, and the rest of the family, that he's not the loser that he sounds like or she changes her mind.

It worked on me.

Hang a silhouette target with few well placed rounds in it, on the wall right near the front door. First thing he ses when he walks in.

I stuck one in one of my windows, facing my azzhole, druggie neighbors house as a "subtle" warning.

speeder 10-21-2010 07:41 PM

Depends on what you mean by "work". If I ever went to a girl's house that I was dating when young and her Dad was doing some 'tough guy' schit like cleaning a gun, I'd instantly lose all respect for him and consider him a fearful, insecure loser. But that's just me...

If you want the guy to respect you, display some balls and self-confidence. Even if you have to fake it.

azasadny 10-21-2010 07:42 PM

What really works is if you're reloading ammo when he meets you...

John Rogers 10-21-2010 07:47 PM

If he is an illegal, call the INS/ICE people. If they start getting evasive then call the local TV stations with their address and then call the feds back and mention you called the TV folks as you would NOT respond. We did this about 12 years ago to a drop house in our neighborhood and the TV crew that showed up at midnight just before a drop off got really great footage and the house was raided the next morning! The whole inside had to be repaired as they had no electricity or running water so you can imagine the smell!

Tobra 10-21-2010 08:05 PM

Mr Rogers, that was my first thought.

Have you pointed out the incongruities with the tales he is telling her.

The gun cleaning thing would work better if you had like six guys there cleaning guns. Especially if it is a small town and one of the guys is her brother and is the state boxing champ in the 150 lb class.

nostatic 10-21-2010 08:21 PM

without pictures of said wife's young cousin, I'm afraid I can't tell...

pwd72s 10-21-2010 08:27 PM

To answer the title question, only if said firearm discharges accidentally into said suitor's heart...

Crowbob 10-21-2010 08:45 PM

If the guy is a grifter, he is well aware of subtleties such as leaving a couple casings on the kitchen counter. You'd be sending him a message but he would not know what that message is. He will immediately be on the defensive. No fake bravado involved at all.

One of my favorite movie lines:

From "Clueless"

Mel: Anything happens to my daughter, I got a .45 and a shovel, I doubt anybody would miss you.

artplumber 10-21-2010 09:20 PM

(as you are cleaning your piece(s))
You can run, but you'll just die tired.

Son, I want you to know I don't have a problem with going back to jail.

We need pics here... If not of the cute cousin, then at least the guns!

cbush 10-22-2010 04:00 AM

[QUOTE=stomachmonkey;5628500]I think you need to take HER out for a few beers and conversation.

+1 Having raised two daughters, this is much more likely to be effective. Tell her that you trust her judgment, but explain why you are concerned.

I would pull the guy aside and explain that she has a large family that cares very deeply for her, and doesn't want to see her get hurt.....
