525i help
So I think that he blower motor is going bad in the 525i. At lower settings it sometimes does not blow at all, and if it does it is usually accompanied by a squealing sound. It also creates a burring smell occasionally. It still seems to work fine when I run it at full blast. Anyone have any experience with this or know how easy (or hard) it might be to replace. The car has a shelf life of about a year so I really do not want to put any significant money into it.
Thanks |
Not a bad job, just pay attention to the position of the ever so lovely metal snap strap that holds the fan in place, the the locator pin that the blower motor sits into. Oh and Just remember to cuss before you get started just to get the juices flowing. :D

Not sure what series 525 you have but on the E39 there is a relay under te radio on the passenger side that can go intermittent. It's a well known problem. My 530i needs a new one but I haven't had the time to replace it. Search the web and you'll come up with FSB or FVR or something like that.

I have an E34 (1993)

I have done a bunch of those final stage units on e 39's. I have done a handful on 3 series cars as well. When they go out, they cause no lo fan speeds, usually you still have high, but on one high speed was out as well. I would imagine that the earlier cars are similar.
I think the blower motor/fan assembly is a dash out pia to replace. |
It is simple to replace, but it's location makes it a little tricky. Hard to unplug, and real hard to snap out of the hvac box. I usually unplug the old final stage unit, and plug the new one into the harness to see if the fans run before I fight it out of the housing. I have two screwdrivers that are bent on 90 deg. angles, that I use to pull/lever the unit out of the box

I had a 2003 540i that needed this replaced. The symptons were variable blower speeds when using the AC in the summer. Ordered the part here from Pelican and replaced it myself. It was a little tricky, but I'm use to working in tight quarters.

Update on this, still having same symptoms. Also noticed yesterday that there is some brown residue on the inside slats of the vent that is in the center of the dashboard that faces up towards the windshield. Any ideas on this?

Does someone have the requisite list of german swears handy? The M3 blew a hose off last weekend.... In messing with that I discovered a the fan switch was toast... Once I do that, the entire cooling system will be less than a year old.....
