Van's RV 6
Hey pelican pilots! What do you think of the RV-6?
|
Hope to get a ride in the RV7 soon...my former f-111 pilot buddy says his is nearly completed...
But wait...these are stunt rated, right? Maybe I don't want that ride... |

Taildragger or Trike?
I think RVs are cool, though I always get the numbers mixed up. :D <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/max_911_fahrer/4876332559/" title="IMG_0644 by Max_911_fahrer, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4134/4876332559_084cba74cf.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_0644" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/max_911_fahrer/4876344297/" title="IMG_0664 by Max_911_fahrer, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4876344297_62c58b5ba8.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_0664" /></a> |

Try the taildragger. A bit faster and looks better. They are good airplanes and have a large following.
|
I don't like the side by side seating, prefer the 3b,4 or 8
|
i wouldn't kick it out of bed for eating crackers.

Friend is building an RV 10 right now. Looks pretty nice and apparantly is a very capable airplane.

The SDS fuel injection owners used a 6A as their test mule, they presently are building a 10
Lots of guys use SDS in aircraft. SDS EM-4: Aircraft In depth of the RV10 build. SDS EM-4: Aircraft |

Max, the "slo" is left over from my time there and even though I have heard the town has changed over the years, I still have a fond spot for SLO. If I were still there, you'd find me at Tio Alberto's all the time.
Just a round trip today, left VNY, cruised to Catalina, did not land there today, then back to the mainland, up the coast a bit to about Point Mugu, over to the Channel Islands, then back over Camarillo via Simi Valley back to VNY. :) Here's the Tiger I fly.... http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2910536_n.jpg |
Sounds like a fun trip. Cruising over near the mountains I like to drive around in. :)
That Tiger is very sporty for something you do not have to assemble before flight. ;) Say, have we ever met? Maybe on a New Year's Day Hangover Run? That Arena Red in your "garage" sure looks great in the Willow Springs sun. Lots of depth and vibrance. |

A co-worker just finished his second RV, he loves them.

LOVE the RV!:) A friend built an RV8A (I prefer the taildragger) that I got to fly. Just a really nice flying airplane. 180HP IIRC. Cruise flight towards a typical summer cumulous build up, pitch the airplane up 20/30 degrees, slow roll over the top, and level out still doing 120mph - nice.:D Good cross country machine and a stable IFR platform I am told.

needs more turbine!!
|
Jimbo went with the trike gear, glass cockpit. Forget which engine. Guess he prefers the trike over the tail dragger for visibility...what he's used to, I suppose.

The harmon rocket is a smoking hot mod to your RV Add a IO540 and look out!! |
RV's are better in nearly every way than any current production certified airplane. I had a two seat Grumman Yankee for several years which was similar in lightness of controls but severely underpowered compared to most RV's. I always dreamed of converting the Yankee with "DMA" mods/STC's to a tail dragger and installing a 180hp Lycoming, but the limited amount of fuel on board makes the conversion less than ideal.

The factory is just down the street from here. I was there on business and the owner (Van?) popped in. He had just flown across town for his daily commute in to work. Very cool. Funny that so many folks know about them.

Van's RV 6
Love the entire RV line. The 6 is perhaps the most user friendly b/c of the side by side seating. Not a "pretend fighter like" as the 3, 4 or 8, b/c of the side by side seating. However, most wife/girlfriend types get very cranky when forced to look at the back of your head for long periods of time.
RV 6s are excellent cross country airplanes b/c of the speed, range and ability to use a short strip, but are not the greatest for IFR work. They are a bit unstable for hard core IFR b/c they are designed for sport performance. Of course an Autopilot solves that problem. A friend of mine who is a former 747 captain had one for several years. He used it for long distance trips. He really wanted a RV 4, but his wife said she refused to stare at the back of his head for hours at a time. He now has a Bonanza b/c he needs the greater seating capacity. RV 6s are a little light in pitch. New pilots can struggle w/ pilot induced oscillation on the elevator. The power to weight makes them wonderful performers and their over handling is addicting. |
