Totally awesome. The kid will probably go on to invent warp drive or something. One thing did cross my mind that is a little disturbing. If the parachute failed to open properly, the camera and iphone falling back to earth over a populated area may not have been the best idea.

Thanks for sharing!!

I'm totally amazed that it only ended up 30 miles away. I figured it would have drifted alot farther than that.

What a ride! :)

Cool video! Amazing how far tech as come, to be able to do this relatively inexpensively.

But, isn't the claim that it went to "space" stretching the truth a bit? This went 100,000 feet, which is around 18 miles. Very high, but I thought the edge between the earth's atmosphere and space was quite a bit higher than that.

30,000 feet higher than the U-2 plane!! That's amazing.

What a cool father and son project/accomplishment!

Now let them try it again with a lizard on board!

LWJ 10-27-2010 07:11 PM

That is flat out impressive. I thought the potato cannon my boy and I made was cool. Not even in the same league!

Very cool! I bet with a little mods he could make, market and sell DIY kits. Wow.

Problem is, that this has already been done - a few years ago. :) Plans are available online.

Very cool! I had read a few months back, about 2 kids from MIT that did this under a budget of $150

I remember the first Estes model rocket I built and launched. It came down on its chute, and ended tangled up high in a tree. I couldnt get to it. It stayed up there for yrs. It was a landmark in the neighborhood for a long time.:D

F A A

(weird, PP won't let me edit the last two letters into capital letters)

I showed this to my Son. He thought they were supposed to get approval from NASA to do this. Thats a testimony on how our kids are starting to think. I guess its because of the bureaucracy and litigious nature of things. Maybe a fear of the Feds?

He did have an idea of how to stabilize the spinning - use a U joint, bearing and an offset weight.

I think the FAA will be knocking on their door and maybe in not the most friendly way. Still, very cool for all. I hope any trouble they get into is minimal and leads to better things.

Balloon and Rocket Regs

Seems they just may have skimmed past the regs, but I don't see the FAA condoning such activity. At least I don't want to be on the airliner that swallows the balloon bag.
