$12,000 or $90...hmmmm (watches again)

Man oh man how I would love to have a Rolex Daytona. That ain't gonna happen anytime soon, but I was surfing for a watch spec (one I bought recently) and stumbled upon an Invicta Speedway. Obviously, it isn't a Rolex, but as a watch I can wear daily and not worry about scratching a 12k Rolex, this one is a pretty good tribute to the Daytona for $90!

This is the other one that came in the mail Friday ($80 delivered). I may give it to one of the kids now that the Speedway is on the way.

I've always looked at expensive watches just like I look at other high fashion - if you want to spend $5,000 for a suit (or, for women, a dress), go ahead - an expensive watch is the same.

The interesting thing is that most of the "automatic" watches are not nearly as accurate as a $10 Walmart watch. That said, I do believe in spending some money to get a functional, good looking, every day watch.

My current favorite is a Tissot - got a $600 watch on Chronoshark for $150, and I've been very happy with - it keeps great time, looks nice, and is well constructed, but it was not so expensive that it would kill me if it got scratched.

Yep! I'm a righty and love lefty watches. That's why I bought this one. The Speedway I can live with as a righty.
Lefty crowns on my left arm interferes less.

I agree about expensive suits and watches. I shy away from the "fakes" fearing it'll fall apart in a week, but I've had great success with the Invicta watches that I have. I have a favorite that is no longer available. I'm afraid to really screw it up eventhough it only cost a few hundred dollars. The thing is solid as a rock and the chronograph works like a chronograph should work (utilizing the second hand as the primary unit.)

I don't mind a watch manufacturer copying the style of the luxury brands, but I want the watch to function well and be built well.

I'm in that same boat. I have an Invicta 6024 that has the look I want. Got it at Invictashark which has a different deal each day. Its an automatic, keeps great time, and I don't have to worry about banging it up. Frankly, I'd rather have an Invicta than a fake Rolex.

That Speedway is a sharp looking watch. I already have more watches than I need but that one may go on the list.

And someday, when I grow up and become a rich and famous rug merchant I will own a Rolex as well.

I know the general opinion of high dollar watches on the board, but I kind of look at it like this. I can't afford a 959, but I would never build a replica of one. And for an overall cost consideration, a $19,000 Toyota would probably be more reliable than a $90,000 Porsche.
I actually like the look of the Force over the Speedway

I should add, if I could afford them, I would get a Daytona, a Uboat Flightdeck Ceramic, and Bell & Ross BR 01-94, and just for the hell of it something from the Romain Jerome Titanic DNA collection.

That's what the cheap watch wearers don't get. They don't know that the hi-end products use sapphire crystal (uber scratch resistant) for the lens, or base material thru-out - not some nanometer of shiny plating.

I wore the Invicta Speedway for several years with a leather band, did very well. Crystal chipped in the end and overall just sorta lost its shine, but I really liked it.
15th Anniversary the wife and I exchanged watches, ended up with a new Rolex GMT master, with the new ceramic bezel. Beauty, wearing it everyday.

Yeah, I samshed one of my watches good against a planter box in a mall, and thought I took a good chunk out of it. A few days later the bit of planter box that looked like a scratch and was stuck to the watch finally fell off, the opposite of what I thought.

It was only a couple hundred dollar Movado too, not something super high dollar. That sapphire crystal is tough stuff.

Lets do the math. If I smash my $75 watch once a year it will take me take me 40 years before I cover the cost of a nice used $3k Rolex (not counting the cost of maintenance) on the Rolex. Would I spend the money for a nice Breitling, Rolex, or Patek? If I had that kind of cash, sure but there are other things I'd buy first. A GT3 drives better than my Carrera but the Breitling keeps time the same as my Invicta. It all boils down to what you consider "too much". What used to be excessive is now a minimal requirement. The more money you have, the more things that were "too much" become "that's nice, I'll take two".

I have a Daytona in stainless and then one in 18k. Love the gold one but man is it heavy, so tend to wear the stainless one more. Either way they sure are nice watches.

Man Joe..share the wealth!

I can appreciate the quality (durability, reliability and accuracy) of high priced watches, but I just don't think it's necessary if I can have the features and "compromised" quality I want for 100-500 hondos...

When I retire, I'll buy myself a Daytona...

I'd agree with that. I don't have a Rolex, but I've worn TAG Heuers as daily watches for the past 20+ years. Through everything. OK, well, I took it off when I did martial arts or played lacrosse. The inexpensive one shows its fair share of scratches (there's a reason why it cost $160 back in the day) but keeps on ticking. But the mid-range one looks almost as good today as the day I got it. Very little wear shows.

I understand the "how many times can I replace the cheaper version instead of buying the $$$$ item over 20 years" argument. But personally I'd rather have something nice which lasts 20 years, rather than something disposable. Isn't that why I have a 23 year-old Porsche?
