I'm sure booing has been a part of sports for decades if not centuries. What I'm talking about is the fans voicing their displeasure of anything opposite their views or team. And in chorus. I think it's OK to boo a bad call or bad move. I don't think it's OK to boo while the line up is being announced.

Putting on the pop psychologist hat now, I think booing by the crowd is a uniting experience, probably relating to the urge to feel a belonging to something.
I suspect the Romans probably booed the christians so this behavior is not a recent happening.
Booing during the lineup intro is a perfect time to boo IMHO, then the boo can be pin-pointed.

We think it's very disrespectful and our kids know better than to boo. Petco Park (Padres) is pretty laid back and rarely do fans boo anyone - well except for a few years back when Barry Bonds was to town with the Giants. They only high profile MLB player we (as a family) really dislike is A-Rod and still we would never boo him.

At a Giants home game against the Dodgers...

Well, let's just say there are some rather disrespectful chants!

I think that's where "Beat...The... Bums!!" originated.

I was at the last night game against the Dodgers at Candlestick park.
Tommy Lasorda was doing that two handed, over head, hero's clasp gesture while being driven around the field in a yard cart. Totally loving the attention. Laughing and smiling while the fans were offering straight, FUNK!!

I seem to remember the stadium music was "That's Amore' ".
( Giants won that night )

Sports booing is not mean spirited, in my opinion.

Like with Bonds in opposing parks, fans were watching the best player in the history of the game, statistically. There's no booing that.

It's like when a traded player returns for his first game against his former team...Boos!

It doesn't mean anything.
It's all part of friendly rivalry, which the Giants/Dodgers may have the longest in sports!

The Giants and A's are almost within sight of each other.

Hard to say which team I've watched more.
With inter-league play, the Giants get booed in Oakland and the A's get it in San Fran.
From there own fans...

It's just for fun.

Growing up pretty much in SoCal, I saw more Giants games at Chavez than I did at the 'Stick.

Going to college in Berkeley, I also went to a lot of A's games...it was a roast trying to get to a Giants weekday game.

I do have a favorite story, a bit Rockwellian, but true:

I was twelve and, like most Little League teams in the greater LA area, we made a trek to Chavez Ravine to see the Dodgers. They were playing the Giants.

I sat next to an older gentleman decked out in Dodger blue. He asked me my favorite team.

Giants!

Really?

As the game progresses, he ribs me about the Giants (always.
the bridesmaid, never the bride). Good stuff, well intentioned...he was one of those guys.

I don't remember if it was Bonds or McCovey who was at bat, but the old gent said to me: "If you're a Giant fan, bet me 50 cents he hits the next pitch out".

I had the coins and the stones: Ok.

Next pitch was jacked like cheese...touch'em all.

A Dodger Dog never tasted sweeter.

No, no green. I particularly noticed booing from the phillies fans at Buster Posey. I think it had to do with him being up for rookie of the year. And their candidate not doing much.

I don't boo. I will chant Beat LA.

I'm sitting at the 4th St. Bar& Grill at 4th& Mission, if anyone is in the neighborhood.

Izzat a straight bar?

trekkor 11-01-2010 04:05 PM

I'm not moving.

Sitting here, bumping multiple forums, tilting a barley and watching the game!

I'm listening to the game on radio and watching the game on TV.
I have DirecTV, so the game is about 4 seconds behind live.

That's OK, the TV announcers are just jibber-jabbering.
