Hydrocortisone question

I have Poison Ivy. Must have gotten it Saturday night while getting wood out of the woods for a fire. Started showing symptoms Monday night on my hands, arms, and face.

Have two different types of perscription cream that the dr. wrote m e a script for.

Clobetasol Prop 0.05% Cream 60GM for Arm and Leg lesions

Hydrocortisone 2.5 Cream 30GM for Facial lesions

The Dr said I should apply this 2/day...now would I be doing myself any harm if I upped the ante to say 4/day? It usually doesn't bother me, but once it starts to itch I apply more cream to the area.

I tried searchignt his on webmd and can't seem to find the terms to narrow the search.

As always thanks.SmileWavy

I used that stuff and ended up in the "chest" thread.

Clobetasol is strong as heck, careful with that.

It would sort of depend on the surface area, it would probably be okay, but you can cause skin to thin out or get funky coloring with too much. Have you tried benadryl by mouth?

BRPORSCHE 11-04-2010 03:48 PM

Tried benadryl. Can't tell if it stops me from itching, or just puts me to sleep and stops me from itching.

Haven't taken one in atleast a day though.

Thanks toby.SmileWavy

I'll watch myself with the high powered stuff. I have been using a lot of the low power and it seems to be working just fine.

I was also given a cortisone shot in my hip since it seems to be breaking out on the roof of my mouth.

You're a mess Tom. Next time, don't eat it!

BRPORSCHE 11-04-2010 04:28 PM

Jeez eff that Clobetasol! Looks like I'll be sticking to the low power stuff! Thanks tobra!

Suck it up.
My 11 year old daughter was covered head to toe...3 times this year alone...she lived.
I just asked her if anything worked...she said "no".

I had it on my ankles this year, fun isn't it?

What happened to the young lady on the bottom?

It hasn't gotten to your balls yet? It started on my leg, but I didn't know what it was the first day. After lunch I had a little itch on my nuts when I was taking a piss. By night fall, fuch oh dear.

Search for Poison oak or ivy. I had it 6 months ago, for the first time. It truly is the devil's work. It was a B!tch. Nothing helped. A visit to the doctor, and he gave me some drugs and the itching stopped within a half a day. I didn't care what it was, as long as the itching stopps.

Some of those super duper steroids scare me, orders of magnitude stronger than plain old hydrocortisone. I will write for them for stuff on the bottom of the foot, but that skin is thick if you can get relief from something not as strong, it cuts down on chance of adverse effects. The steroid injection will chill that inflammatory response out.

The benadryl is an anti-histamine and will sedate a bit. If you are asleep and not scratching, does it matter if it itches still? How did you get it on the roof of your mouth? That poison oak/ivy/sumac stuff is freakin' nasty.

There are some that would say, "Son, you best soak some rags in coal oil and wrap them around your ankles so the ants don't climb up your leg and eat your candy ass right off." I would probably never say that, but I know people who would.

For goodness sake wash your hands after putting that steroid cream on.

Pussy.....

Just saying.....

Oh, BTW, the steroids kick my ass big time.

aigel 11-04-2010 10:49 PM

Try this

Amazon.com: Tecnu Extreme Medicated Poison Ivy Scrub (4 oz): Health & Personal Care: Reviews, Prices & more

it works very well to cool the itch. Also, if you know you got exposed right away, it does help clean it up (it has an abrasive in it, scrubbing the skin) if you apply right away.

I would be careful with high percentage (prescription) cortisone over large areas of skin. That stuff soaks in and can mess with your body - it is a pretty potent steroid.

So, my vote is Tecnu and suck it up. If cortisone, go to the 1% OTC.
