Translation on der bild website leaves something to be desired, much like Herr Gemballas' designs. (But I hope they find him alive. Johannesburg is not exactly a vacation destination.)

Ouch...I too, hope he's okay. But I can't figure his "vacation" destination. I mean, why not take a walking tour of certain parts of L.A.?

Depends where in JoBurg he is. I have spent a lot of time there and if he is holed up in a hotel room with a girl or three it could be fun, otherwise not a good situation.
Four Points area where we stayed is nice, as is Mandela Square, but other parts, like ANY big city can be difficult at night...

Gemballa closed by German authorities? | Cars UK | UK Car News
"In a twist to yesterday’s story about Gemballa’s founder – Uwe Gemballa – being missing in South Africa, we’ve just been called by a contact in Germany who has told us that German Government officials have sealed the offices of Gemballa this morning. It would be wrong of us to speculate at this point on the reasons for this, although we did hear rumours yesterday about the possible reasons for Uwe’s disappearance which we couldn’t publish. Our source has told us that the cars at Gemballa have been impounded and the owners are being contacted to provide proof that the cars belong to them or Gemballa. If they are unable to do this the cars will be seized. We are trying to verify this story as we write, and will update this article as soon as we get more news. We hope the reports are incorrect, but they do come from a good source." |

While it could be that the German government shut down Gemballa's operations due to some scandal or wrong-doings, it is equally likely that they did so as part of the investigation

My guess as well. Knowing how they work in Germany this sounds correct.

based on their 'designs' and typical customer i'd guess they're being investigate for selling coke in the middle east.
seriously don't wish harm on the guy, but it wouldn't be a bad thing if he found something else to do.

Vermisster Sportwagen-König Uwe Gemballa: Letztes Lebenszeichen aus Hotel in Südafrika - Stuttgart - Stuttgart - Bild.de
02.17 Stuttgart already reported on Monday about his disappearance in South Africa. First, the authorities did not take the case very seriously, waived the right to publicity investigation. Gemballa ultimately much about jetting around the world to attend the exclusive clientele and his eleven branch offices. His company prepares, among other things Porsche to up to 1000 hp high, conceded per luxury car to about 700 000. Now comes out: The last sign of life from Uwe Gemballa came from a hotel in Johannesburg (3.5 million inhabitants), one of the most dangerous cities in the world. A friend: "From there, Uwe phoned his wife after he had landed at the airport." The local police in Boeblingen, perplexed. Locating on the mobile phone of the sports car king was unsuccessful. A business partner: "A week ago I have not phoned him. Since then go near any, although I've tried it dozens of times. We must assume that his mobile phone switched off or is broken. " |

Johannesburg, huh? There's a very good chance he'll be going back home air freight, in very small boxes.
