I'm not familiar with the Evo, but some of the other new Android phones will do mobile wifi hotspots by themselves. A good question for the phone store people, since there is a monthly fee for some things.
PDAnet is over USB or bluetooth.
I have no experience with using our VPN and my droid, so I can't comment on that.

There is a flash update for the droid. I think you can just search for it in the market and it will show up.
There is also an Adobe pdf reader.

You can do it the 'official' way for an extra $30 a month. Not one time, but $30 every month.

The guy at the store was sure there were other ways to do the same thing without the monthly fee.

Droid apps

Any dyno or g-tech type apps that are free/useful?

A friend told me about one called aDyno. I have not tried it as I don't have a car mount for my droid x, but the demo is free and the full version is $4.83 from the market.

I forgot about aCar until it reminded me today to check the air pressure in my daughters Sonata. Luckily we did that yesterday before she drove to the Bay Area.

aCar collects service and gas filling information. Graphs all sorts of parameters. By entering all your fillups it will tell you average mileage with various octane fuels etc. Great for family fleet management. Collects notes for VIN, PLATE, tire size etc. Service reminders can be fully customized by time or mileage. I added valve adjustment for the Targa.

The Pro version (donation) adds more frequent and auto backup and more graphs - a logical addon once you have some data collected.

Most important function is tracking the maintenance of the two vehicles that I don't drive. My daughter has been trained to write her mileage on the gas receipt before expecting reimbursement. As for my wife - haven't bothered to ask - I fill the family van occasionally myself and earn some points for husbanding beyond all the other maintenance.

Yes, as GTC stated, it works via USB or blue tooth.

I'd really like to use it as a hotspot for the kids iPod touch etc.
Some of the newest phones are now supporting the feature. I don't know about the Evo. T-Mobile is. They are also going to start charging for it.

I will want to VPN in to the work network. I think we are able to use either the Cisco or Microsoft VPN client.
If you can use the Microsoft client, I don't think you'll have to root (some VPN is supported), but if you have to use a client that supports a group username and password AND a regular username and password, then you'll have to root.

Then I'll want a TN5250 client. :D
not a problem, I think there are a few

I think for a full implementation, you have to have software ver 2.2. I think there is a lite version if you've got software ver 2.1. With 2.2 (Froyo) you get full Flash, and with just about any version, you get acrobat reader capabilities.

Yep, most of the carriers charge. T-mobile is getting ready to start.

Again, I think it depends upon the version of software that your phone is running. Most of the newest phones should come with it or have it available really soon.

Don't Hang Up - prevents unwanted input from the touch screen
Places - very good for finding restaurants, gas, atm
Google Earth
Adobe Reader (pdf)
- Can't get flash player to work on the Samsung Galaxy S

Well, I've had my EVO for a couple of days now and so far I love it. I'm just starting to take advantage of some of the features but have one annoyance.

I've loaded my pictures and a couple of videos and when I'm showing off the phone/video/pictures without fail the person will touch the home or back button. I've read that you can 'lock' these buttons on other phones by hitting the power/lock button while the picture, slide show, or video is up. But on my EVO, when I do this it just locks the phone.

Any ideas? Maybe this is device specific and not an Android feature?

cstreit 12-09-2010 06:55 AM

You'll love the EVO. It is the first phone I ever owned that I had NO complaints over. I DID buy a second batter and a desktop charger (slot to charge the phone and spare battery) on amazon for $30 total.

I use all the time:

Apps:
FlightView - Simple and effective.
Kindle for Android
Flashlight app (uses camera LED's)
Task Killer (occasionally)
Google Nav (should come with it)

Games:
Live Holdem
UnblockMe - great for kids
PS3 friends - check who's on

I really like unblock me. Maybe even more than angry birds. :D

I am looking at battery solutions, but so far I've been close enough to my desk to just plug it in to the USB.

My wife showed me a very cool app for those who walk, run, hike, bike outside. It's called Runkeeper. It keeps track of your route, elevation changes, speed, etc. Works really well on my Droid2. Seems like a whole lot of utility for something that's free.

There's a google app for that now too called "My Tracks". This is the sort of data that you get. I find the data from these phones to be pretty good except the elevation. I've never found that to be accurate.

Anybody transfer to the EVO from an iPhone. I'm about ready for an upgrade and can't decide between an EVO and an i4

TimT 12-16-2010 04:00 AM

Another similar app is "iMapmyrun" it tracks your route, maps it, calculates calories burned etc..

A few people in my office (myself included) looked at both. It's about a 60/40 split in favor of the iPhone.

For me, I didn't want to switch to AT&T, and I really didn't want to pay what worked out to be about $80 more a month for our family plan.

I have been VERY happy with the EVO.
