Pediatric second opinion. ??
My daughter, Grace is 14 months old. Last night @ 8:30 she vomited. after that she vomited about once every two hours. She did not have a fever. This morning Mrs. Crusty took her to her pediatrician and the doctor told her to give her pedialyte (sp) and the B.R.A.T. diet. Grace slept from 11:30 ( when they got home) to about 3:00. She has had small sips of pediatlyte (sp) then Mrs. Crusty fed her some food ( the B.R.A.T. diet ) not less than a half hour later she vomited. Mrs Crusty thinks it is time for the emergency room ( it is her first child ) I do not think she is that sick at all ( three children in late teens with a 100% survival rate) maybe just a stomach bug. It is approaching 24 hours since it all started and Mrs. Crusty is panicking. B.T.W. MIL is here on vacation and is a Nurse with 40+ years experience and Mrs. Crusty is a nurse with 7 years experience, but neither have pediatric experience. I am asking the brain trust what would you do and If you are a doctor I am especially interested.
Thanks in advance.

No doctor but my 4 YO had this a few weeks ago. She was sick(same symptoms) for about 24 hours and then just fine.
As we understood it, there was a stomach flu going around at the time. Of course, it doesn't hurt to be extra careful.

Tough call, sometimes the visit to the doc does the mom more good than the little patient. Since it is almost a Sat. nite you need to decide soon, before the er fills with sat nite fever. I would try to buy another 12hrs to monitor and see what the morning brings.
No fever seems to lower the crucialness of an E R visit, good luck. Having worked in hospitals, am reluctant to go to them unless absolutely needed. Again best of luck and I hope mom, mil and little one get some rest.

When child cries are there tears, is she peeing still, is it darker yellow than normal?
Small amounts of pedialite frequently, clear liquids, jello, popsicles. Try them on rice that is sort of overcooked to where it is falling apart with a little sugar and cinnamon when they are keeping liquids down. Weigh the kid, if they lose 10%, 20lb to 18lb for example, might need to saddle up. IV fluids will really perk you up if you are spewing out either end. I have the advantage of being married to someone who could get a IV started on a GD hummingbird, which is plenty handy.

Thanks for the responses. She is still urinating, it is starting to get slightly concentrated. She has not cried though. She is sleeping again after a quick playtime and book reading time. She has had about three ounces of Pedialite. She also had some bathwater probably two ounces. I think she is going to be normal tomorrow. I will update in a little while. Thanks again.

I wouldn't worry so much about food - just keep the small constant fluids of various types.
My son never went to the ER for vomiting but I have twice. Both time after about 12 hours of constant hurling. Once I couldn't feel my extremities it was time to get an IV and some compazine. Gastroenteritis is no fun... |

It may be nothing but take her to th emergency. first off it's better safe then sorry. But vomiting can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can damage organs.

My daughter became dehydrated when she was 2, needed IV. Doesn't take long when they can't keep liquids down, only a day or so.

Dad911- agreed the little ones dehydrate quickly. Dehydration in an infant isn't anything to mess with.
If she is spewing every time something goes into her belly nothing is being absorbed into her system. In addition the process of spewing (not what comes out but what creates the energy within the body to expel) also uses bodily fluids and dehydrates further. I would have been at the ER yesterday. |

Hi
|
Dehydration is an issue with either vomiting or diarreaha (sp). The ER is erroring on the side of caution. As mentioned above, Pedialite, popsicles, etc. Keep a close eye on your baby if they become "rag doll" like its time for the ER.

She had a full diaper this morning, we are taking her now just in case. She can't keep much down in the way of food. Now the wife has got whatever it is. I had it several months ago. I hope no one else gets it or it will be like the Mr. Creosote scene in Monty Pythons' meaning of life.

For the record, starting (or worse, trying but failing to start) an IV for a markedly dehydrated pediatric patient sucks on a lot of levels. Because of this, when the barf-o-ramas start at my house, I start pushing fluids and sleep on my kids early.
Significant fever, along with (or caused by) dehydration can lead to real trouble (siezures...) fairly quickly. |

We went, they sent us home. My neighbor is a pediatrician so I asked her to come over for a house call. She said she looks o.k. and to just keep doing what we are doing ( pedialite, pedialite popsicles, and small bits of food).

Good job.
With a little kid like that, if your little voice is saying "maybe we should go to the hospital," get in the car. I tend to stick with the clear liquids until the puking is over, then start the bland diet. Wash your hands with soap and water a lot, wash the kids' clothes, do the bedding often, with bleach. Breaks your damn heart when they are sick like that.

Good news. Glad it worked out.
Did she eat anything a little odd/off recently? Have you considered food poisoning?

I would consider the urgent care before the er.
If she is still playful and doesn't have fever I would worry less. But, I'm just a dad too- with less experience than you. No dr here... |
