Who owns the rights to Beatles songs? I never understood why they weren't available on itunes. They could have been making millions.

They don't need iTunes -- last year alone, they sold 3 million albums.

Not too shabby for a bad that broke up 40 years ago!

For the most part: Sony & MJ's estate with percentages to John's estate & Paul.

At this point it matters very little to have the Beatles on Itunes. I downloaded their greatest hits from a cd and put the songs on my Ipod years ago. AC DC is another that only sells CDs, no Itunes, that I have done the same. It will be curious to see how many songs they do sell, though.

I'm a huge Beatles fan and my response to this one is "who gives a crap". Anyone who ever voluntarily listened to the Beatles has already ripped all of their CDs and been listening to MP3s for years.

Next announcement: Corvettes will now be available for sale at US Post Offices. Because, you know, some people can't be troubled to go to a car dealer to buy them.

I'm sure there's a huge younger generation of soon to be Beatles fans that will eat them up on iTunes

They'll sell a bunch. Some of it to me, as I never got CDs to replace my vinyl (that are sitting in the garage and are scratched anyway). My son is going to be very happy...

I wonder how many of these buyers already own the songs they're buying in a different format.

nostatic 11-17-2010 02:19 PM

dunno. I'll end up buying some that I have on vinyl simply because the fidelity will be better on the new tracks - my albums are in poor condition from over-use. There certainly is a significant amount of the population that won't digitize vinyl or rip CDs.

True enough, but that makes no sense to me other than for the casual listener looking for the random single.

Amazon has reduced the price of most Beatles CD's to $7.99 Paying $5.00 less for a remastered, full resolution CD and investing 90 seconds to rip it into iTunes with Apple Lossless seems much more attractive to me than paying Apple $12.99 for a 256K download of the same tracks.

Heh - nice catch. Just ordered everything from Rubber Soul through Let It Be.

Lots of people will still order off iTunes. Instant gratification along with not having to deal with discs and ripping.
