Here is my 2000R.

You're right about the room with the rear seats down. I'm 6'4" and I have been plenty comfortable sleeping back there, even with a XL 29er HT inside as well.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1290016667.jpg

High Performance Volvo Station Wagon. Isn't that like saying "racing turtle?"

Laneco 11-17-2010 09:13 AM

NICE! Like the dual exhaust. Factory? The bumper cut-outs are awfully nice if it's not. Like the tint as well. That's on the list of things to do.

How do you like your 29er? I've been thinking about one. Alot of 24 hr racers have gone to them. They seem to just roll beautifully. But not too sure how they work out for people five and a half feet tall. I get a significant amount of toe lap on my 'cross bike. Of course, if I rode faster, I wouldn't have to make those nasty corrections that cause toe lap!!

And Superman? We all know you secretly lust for one, that you dream of wrapping your big ole man fingers around the wheel and gasping at that stunning rush of acceleration, while the back is full of your racing tires and it's flat towing your 911! Everybody else might be hatin' but you'll be stylin'!!

(Okay, so maybe not stunning acceleration - but quite decent on the highway).

Didn't Paul Newman use an old volvo wagon with "hot chevvy" transplants as a daily driver? He didn't like "look at me" machines, but he liked quick machines. ;)

onlycafe 11-17-2010 10:55 AM

newman and letterman each had a hot volvo wagon, but if i recall correctly they were ford powered.

no trips over the passes in winter?

Factory in 2000, although what you see pictured is aftermarket.

Been on a 29er for 4 yrs, wish I would have done it sooner. Feels and fits me at 6'4" much better than a 26". My riding buddies claim it has made me about 50%-75% faster. And I would agree. In MN, a HT 29er is just about perfect for 80% of our local single track, although this year I am going to try a Thud Buster seat post to give my 44 yr old back a bit of a break.

I always try to buy a DD for it's "90%" usage. Well over 90% of the time, AWD is worthless to me, costs more to buy, costs more to maintain/repair, and adds weight. This car is heavy enough.

Even if there's some snow, this car will be fine on the passes. Slow down, chill out, if needed throw on a set of chains. I'm pretty comfortable driving in the snow. I guess it comes from years of driving 2 wheel RWD cars all year around including when I used to ski avidly. I even had the misfortune of driving the spyder in the snow one time. Actually not a big deal except that the car has no heat or roof so it was very uncomfortable physically. If the weather ist exceptionally ugly, I can take the 4x4 Ford Crew Cab. Or just stay home until the pass clears. The Siskiyous just aren't that bad. :D

Nice, Angela!

This thread perfect timing for me (hope this isn't a hijack). In 2008 I bought this C30 new:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1290034418.jpg

It was pretty much an impulse purchase; I fell in luuv with its styling (). Turns out I really like the car - 6 spd manual, 227 hp turbo, 5 cyl, but now I'm kicking myself for not getting a larger wagon that I can haul canvases (my paintings) in.

Only have 23.5 k miles on it and thinking about selling it and getting a late model Volvo wagon, maybe a "pre-owned" one with some kind of warranty, from a dealer.

Seems a lot of you guys like these. I know nada about Volvos. Not interested in high performance - I alresdy have my 450 hp (it has SSIs - otherwise stock :)) 82 SC that goes to 60 in 3.4 sec. and tops 180 mph.

I figure I'll end up paying some out of pocket. Any particular models, maybe 2004 or earlier that I should look at?

1990C4S 11-17-2010 02:29 PM

My 4WD Expedition was no better in the snow than my Volvo with four good snow tires.

Laneco 11-17-2010 03:35 PM

Oh holey smokes, Darisc the C30 is what I would LOVE to have! I think they are really neat. I really think the automakers are missing the boat by not giving us more hot hatchbacks. They combine sportiness with very decent cargo. The last one I had was a 91 Civic SI. Great little car, big as a barrel in side with tidy exterior proportions.

As far as newer Volvos, I really couldn't chime in there as it was out of the old $$$ range so I didn't investigate them at all. But the cool thing about Pelican is that SOMEBODY here has - LOl! I can tell you this, though, the C30 seems to sell for a lot of bucks as a used car. Depreciation is very light compared to most new cars and that would be good news if you did a trade in.

I was just teasin'. Volvos are very good cars. I'd be proud to drive one.

Washington State Patrol has a program called the Aggressive Driver Unit. These are totally unmarked, standard-plate, totally stealthy cars out looking for aggressive drivers. I suspect the all-time heavyweight champion of those cars was, of course, the white Volvo station wagon. That's entrapment. Who's not going to zoom around that car?

I'm still teasin'.

Yeah, pretty cool, huh? :D. It's as quick as a VW GTI w/more room (strikes me as a notch up in quality and features overall, but I think they're competitors). Some auto mag writer described it, compared to the others in a comparo, as the one with the posturepedic suspension; it floats along, but rock solidly, and is reeeal quiet...mebbe I shuld keep it. :(

What puzzles me is that I've only seen 4 or 5 of them on the road around here (SOCAL) since I bought it in '08. I hear they're good sellers in Europe & Canada. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's wrong wheel drive. I think they may be offering an AWD version as well.

I'm a volvo wagon nut. On my fourth one now.

Took my 95 850T wagon to Willow Springs several years ago with a bunch of guys from here on pelican. It surprised everyone except me. It had full IPD suspension(sways, shocks, springs) and handled very well. After that event I converted it to a 5 speed and that made it perfect. Manual turbo models were not available in the states, but you could get them in Canada or Europe. Very easy conversion, looked completely factory and all the parts to do it were about $700 bucks.

Had that car until last year when some Jackass decided to do a illegal u-turn in front of me. Totaled the car, but most importatly my two young girls werent hurt at all. Surprisengly, the Insurance company gave me $4700 and the car had about 200K miles on it.

I immediatly went out and bought a 2006 6 speed V70R. I love this car. Took this to Streets of Willow 2 weeks ago and it was awesome. This one also has IPD track spec sways and springs and a TME exhaust. After every single session someone would come over to question me about what I had done to this Volvo. I haven't even done the ECU on this one. Im waiting for IPD to finish up on thier stage 3 upgrade and then it will be over 400HP. Crappy cell phone pic. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1290075414.jpg

These are the rims I'm going with.

Love it Angela awesome..love the turbo brick! Especially in wagon form.

In 2007 I put a down payment on a V70-R and then decided against it, as my good friend who is a Tech at Volvo warned me that the V70R "drove great ran they ran but be prepared to deal with nagging issues as the miles pile on". He said that the Turbo V70s were very frustrating for their owners and repair bills were sobering.

So I walked and bought an Infiniti M45 instead.

Still always liked the 850-R and the V70-R as well, beautiful cars. Congrats on a sweet buy.

The V70R/S60R are much more complicated cars and can have some expensive repairs. Replacement shocks for the 4C system are expensive and the angle gear is a known problem and expensive repair. The manual cars are known for needing slave cylinders replaced and thats also expensive. Knock wood, I have 110K on my R, but I'm expecting an expensive reapir bill soon. So far, the only money I've spent on it have been aftermarket upgrades. When it breaks, I will get it fixed. there really isn't any other Q ship out there like the R wagon, without spending big bucks.

Laneco 12-15-2010 05:58 PM

Went to do a tuneup on Helga, but found the PO had beat me too it. Plug, cap, rotors and wires were brand new. Cool! Picked up a 2nd hand spoiler, had it painted to match and I put it on last week along with the new hatch shocks. Also had the windows tinted. While I was fiddling with the hatch, I fixed all the dang rattles and removed the rear emblems. Someone had SUPERGLUED an R emblem in addition to stock Volvo and 850 Turbo. Sure looks alot better without all that silliness on it.

Car runs wonderfully and the more I drive it, the more I love the Alcantara seats.

Now I have to save up some $$$ for some suspension upgrades and wheels! Oh and need to lose those side emblems too. They make a small light that fits there. Much better than the emblem.
