Moving past the coitus...

There was a vocal minority of MoMA members who got their shorts in a bunch when vehicles were first added to the permanent collection several decades ago. It made perfect sense to me, however. Most notably an early E-Type roadster and my personal favorite, John Barnard's lovely Coke bottle shaped 641/2 from 1990. One of the most brutally beautiful objects ever, IMO.

"That's not art", they sniffed.."just cars". I promptly renewed my membership just on principle.

Taken last year, with apologies for the crappy iPhone resolution:

Taz, maybe I should have asked the question differently because you certainly make a point. Would you be kind enough to rewrite the question so that it addresses the issue of what is art and when does it get censored?

I think that art is understood/appreciated at an individual level and censorship happens at some social level. Often uninteresting, offensive, or disturbing themes are unpleasant and intentionally avoided at the individual level, but that really isn't the same as being prevented from experiencing them.

FYI, how I define art: An exhibition of craft that transcends its function and communicates a message of emotion, the human condition, or the larger world. It is neither a particularly specific definition, or one I would have trouble changing. Many people have trouble appreciating art because they are unwilling to challenge their definition of what art is.

That would also work.

Ah, the word "craft" enters the discussion. A huge overlap there. You know, the Dickmobile was a hugely craft project. Making a 15' long figberglass penis was not the point.

Maybe they should have built a porcupine.

Big 'ol can of worms.
Next ya'll(S.E. bible belt reference) will be talking about who is "qualified" to view such material: Father? Mother? Adult child m/f? Sub-Adult child m/f?....
(I'm getting out the popcorn.)

If you ya'll were really serious, you be erasing all evidence, all over the world, of DaVinici and other promoters of necked peoples. (gasp).

What society finds appropriate or not falls into a discussion of right and wrong, unless you believe in absolute standards of right and wrong, you get what society gives you. David, Venus, and those obese Rubin women are fine for grade schoolers, Linda Lovelace plying her trade isn't even allowed here.

Maybe the question isn't why is some art censored, but rather why does some art that seemingly depicts qualities of pornography not get censored?

Zeke 11-18-2010 04:03 PM

"qualities of pornography"

Another oxymoron.

Red Breast is simply the best and it is a work or art! When I could drink alcohol, Red Breast was a special treat!
