I had a heart attack yesterday

Went in for a routine check up, they did an EKG, a fib (strange heart beat) sent me to the ER, apparently I had a heart attack a while back, they installed a stint 75% blockage.
I feel lucky. Time for a lifestyle change.

pwd72s 11-17-2010 06:40 PM

Yes, funny how these reminders of mortality pop up...

Good of you to heed them.

LeeH 11-17-2010 06:40 PM

Congratulations on your bonus life. Use it well.

jyl 11-17-2010 06:40 PM

Damn. Yes. Keep us informed. You're not the only one who needs to make a change, so please share what you're doing and learning. And most important, let us know how you are doing.

stomachmonkey 11-17-2010 06:50 PM

Scary how you can have them and not know.

Glad you are still with us and on the mend.

BRPORSCHE 11-17-2010 06:52 PM

Wow. Glad you are still here to still post. I am sure your family is happy that ya went in for that check up.

Stay healthy minkoff.

trekkor 11-17-2010 06:53 PM

Wow!

Hugh R 11-17-2010 06:56 PM

Cool! The best thing is you didn't kick, they found the blockage and you're on your way back. It sucks you had it, but its very cool for the rest of the story.

ODDJOB UNO 11-17-2010 07:05 PM

how old are you?

Racerbvd 11-17-2010 07:13 PM

WOW, I had my yearly yesterday as well, , I brough it up to him that I have been having black outs & dizzy spells more frequently, so he told me to stand up, took my blood pressure in my left arm, said it was very low, then took the pressure in my right arm, much higher:eek: You were lucky, good for you..

Laneco 11-17-2010 07:37 PM

WOW! 126coupe - you may have dodged the proverbial bullet. Congratulations on a second chance that alot of people just don't get. Please take care of yourself!

Byron? What does that mean when the blood pressure is higher on one side than the other?

angela

GWN7 11-17-2010 07:53 PM

Byron,

I hope your doc scheduled you for a CT scan?

Tobra 11-17-2010 08:19 PM

Way to stay on the right side of the grass, good for you. Do what they tell you, do the cardiac rehab, every day, for the rest of your life.

Byron, WTF dude, blackouts and dizziness more frequently?

Get thee to a cardiologist

Usually, if you look back there was some episode you passed off as something else. But not all abnormal ECG's truly mean you had a heart attack. PM if you would like to bounce some stuff off me.

Byron, sounds like you may need a cardiolovascular specialist too. One that does hearts and peripheral arterial disease (not a vascular surgeon).

LeeH 11-17-2010 09:29 PM

My dad had his first heart attack at 55. After a couple of more he had bypass surgery. One of my brothers died of a heart attack nine years ago at age 47. My oldest brother, who's 66, just had some sort of surgery to correct a severe flutter that caused him to black out.

Wondering if I should request a stress test just to get a base line.

Take care of yourself and do what the Dr says...

Rednine11 11-18-2010 04:29 AM

I had one a couple months back. I am only 41 and a non smoker. it makes you stop and think that's for sure

Glad to hear that you're ok....

Targa Me 11-18-2010 05:26 AM

Congrats on your new lease on life.... use it wisely.

David 11-18-2010 06:12 AM

Glad to hear you're OK!

My dad died at 43 from his 9th heart attack. I'm 43 and in perfect health. Even with good health I see a cardiologist once a year and get a stress test at least every 18 months.

By routine check, I assume you were unaware of the atrial fibrillation and had no history of chest pain or angina? If this is the case, there may have been no indication for your stent (unless biomarkers were positive) and potentially a relative contraindication if your risk score for atrial fibrillation indicated coumadin management (CHADS score >1).

vash 11-18-2010 07:29 AM

take care of yourself coupe!!

I had atrial fibrillation a week a go when I had my colonoscopy, they told me to get to the doctor asap, I waited a week. I have been experiencing heartburn for months, just downing Tums daily thinking it was just heartburn, just plain stupid.

Rikao4 11-18-2010 08:16 AM

it's just heartburn...
seen those many times in the ER..
sadly often too late..
you got lucky..
oh the other killer..
grunting too hard on the john..
countless folks on the floor..
pants around the ankles..
drool on the tiles..

yer JUST A PUP! i'm 53. time to lay off the doritos/cheetos/chimichangas w/extra guac/sour cream/big macs etc.

glad yer OTAY! dying aint no way of LIVING!

my hunting peudner and close friend stroked on us at 48! he survived, but he still and quite possibly will never be the same. and he didnt smoke at all, drink excessive. all in his familys past.

now heres the kicker....................my doctor amigoes were telling me that the most heart attacks they see and strokes....................are VEGETARIANS! why? because they usually eat so damn much cheese in their diets and clog the hell out of their arteries.

what a hoot! the supposed healthier/smarter humanoids that eat a vegetarian diet stroke out /heart attack faster than us mere mortals who live on tacos/sub sandwiches/chicken/red meat in moderation/ veggies/ nuts/fruits/ slim on the taters, fish/shrimp/BEER(nectar of the gawds) etc.

the (2) races who live the longest due to diet:

the orientals...................and the MESSIKANS! whom eat a traditional diet. ie. not taco bell nor qwickie wow chow panda poo.

glad to hear yer OTAY!

bivenator 11-18-2010 09:14 AM

Glad to hear a postive outcome with a thread title like that. Good luck.

Henry Schmidt 11-18-2010 09:23 AM

Hi Mark
Sorry to hear that your feeling poorly.
I'm glad you got to the doctor before things got crazy.
Take care.
Stay well.

Angina (cardiac pain) is frequently mistaken for heartburn. Glad all turned out well.

The largest population of MI's is still smoking related with diabetics and pre-diabetics catching up fast. Not too many vegetarians with MI's especially vegans but those populations are small to begin with. On the other hand, dairy consumption has the strongest negative correlation with health of any traditional food group in the US.

So you were symptomatic (just didn't quite know it) and didn't necessarily have a heart attack. Don't worry about thinking you're stupid. There are folks in the business of cardiovascular care who have also not recognized their own symptoms and actually had heart attacks. Now you know that for you heartburn could mean a heart problem. syncroid 11-18-2010 11:56 AM

Glad you made it okay Coupe. I was supposed to see my cardiologist tomorrow but they want to change my appointment again.

Don Plumley 11-18-2010 01:03 PM

futuresoptions 11-18-2010 01:31 PM
