Black Friday - HD TV Help
Looking for a LCD HDTV in the 50" + range. My budget is $1k or LESS. Preferably in the $900 range.
If anyone knows of a Black Friday deal, please let me know. I'll be out of town so the wife is doing the shopping. Thanks, Craig

Be sure to measure the seating distances in your room before you go buy a TV that is "too big" or "too small".
There is an optimum viewing distance based on visual acuity: Optimum HDTV viewing distance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Too big and too close and you would see the pixel make-up of the screen. No matter what size screen, for 1080p HDTV, they all have 1080 horizontal lines. Too small and too far away and you gain nothing. JMHO PS: Don't let the fools at BestBuy or where ever tell you you need monster cables, special $60.00 HDMI cables, or their super-duper HDTV antenna. That is all BS. If you need cables go here: http://www.cablesforless.com/c-292-value-hdmi-cables-good.aspx?gclid=CIjTtsPasqUCFYK5KgodXRpaZQ& If you need an antenna for broadcast TV, just get a UHF antenna from your local hardware store. And for speaker cables, just go to Home Depot and buy all you want of the 16ga. lamp cord zipcord. Last edited by abisel; 11-21-2010 at 11:07 AM.. |

Slickdeals or FatWallet for deals. Look for online deals, sometimes you can buy online at midnight, and have your wife pick it up in the store on Friday.
Monoprice for cables and wall mounts. |

Thanks for the additional good info.
Viewing distance will roughly be 12.5' ... should I consider something smaller than 50"? Those wiki numbers are all over the place.

Craig, my company does home theater installs, from small jobs to 10-20 seat dedicated home cinema. At 12.5', or in my language, roughly 3 meters, you would be best with a 42". This will probably give you a cost saving as well. Alternately you can pay more for a better tv.
The best thing to do is go to a store and ask to see both the 50" and 42" at 12.5'. Remembering to make sure you are not standing. Squat down if you have to and get your eye level around the middle of the screen.

Yeh, that might be okay. Again just have a look at the tv at your seating distance. Take a movie with you to that has some fast action shots and some close ups. I use I-Robot and get to the scene when they are in the tunnel and the robots attack. There are many different shots in that few minutes. Close ups of Will Smith's face and fast moving action across the screen. This will give you a good idea of which tv's work the best.

At first, when I bought my TV, I wanted a 50", but after researching viewing distance stuff and going to the store to compare, I decided on a 46". My primary viewing distance is 12' too. At first, I thought it was too big, but after a day or two, that thought went away.
What dewolf says is right. Go to the store and compare. Don't listen to the sales person either. Make your own decision. Then buy online to save on sales tax. Some places will offer free shipping. Don't get fooled into buying extended warranty either. Personally, I like Sony, but I am brand loyal. Cheers, |

I just visited bestbuy today. For around $1k, you have a lot of choices in 46" range between Samsung, Sony, include LED (60hz). I finally took the Insignia 55" LCD 120hz, for the size.

MTBF on most LED's we use in airplanes is around 18,000 hours. It can be as long as 100,000 hours in some applications. At having the TV on 40 hours a week, thats over 8.5 years using the 18k figure. Buy a set from Costco and you do not have to worry about it.

when you go look at Tv's, can the setup of a cheap tv make it look better than an incorrectly setup good tv?
