DSL line at new old house.
 

Hi, hope someone has an idea.
This house has multiple phone lines at the boxes. I plan to get DSL service without phone service from AT&T. Usually, I get both and test the line at the jack inside the house by the dial tone. Now, without phone service, how can I test the jacks/lines and DSL signal? Anyone know a way?

I don't understand what you're asking. The telco can't/won't tell you which line has the service?

You should just be able to order the service, they install it and show you which line has the DSL.

You can just plug your computer in and see if you have a connection.

If it's an old house I'd run new wire inside the house prior to Telco coming by. DSL can be finicky with old wiring.

sometimes pluging the computer in won't do it until you set it up correctly. The problem is it has multiple lines, each line may come to diff rooms. Which room goes with which line? I usually connect one line at a time and take an old phone to plug to each jack in the house to hear the dial tone to be able to tell. Now without a dial tone (no phone service, only DSL), I assume you won't hear anything, even if the line is connected(?)

There are tools to help with this that cablers use but I doubt the are any cheap enough to buy for one time use. You'd be surprised, several if your old lines may still be hooked up and supplying dial tone. I have three lines at my house that still have dial tone that haven't been used in close to 10 years.

You tell the installer I want it
In this room and he'll tone it before he installs.

My money is on you still getting DSL hiss without a Z-filter.

I think you just ought to run a new line from the NID to your router location. CAT5 is cheap, works well, just tell the tele guy you already have the line run and just want him to help you pin out the connection on the female end and I'm sure he'll be happy to punch it down properly for whichever pair color is going to be used at the NID. Also ask if he has any of the good whole house DSL filters - or go buy one at a home store. They install at the NID and give you a dedicated DSL connect and provides the filter connection for the rest of the line.

I do have the filter. Anyway, if I understand spuggy correctly, the DSL alone should make the hissing noise? Through the phone or what?
