you guys into bird feeders?

my lovely, cute wife dragged me to some bird feeder store. i went reluctantly, but agreed when i found out that there was a gun store in the same shopping center. the store was manned by a bunch of older women. all of them were sporting nice new holiday sweaters. i was definately out of my element.

they had a special selling some nice feeder for $9.99 (it came with a 10# bag of food). i asked about squirrels. they said, if i wanted to keep the squirrels out, i could put a cage around the feeder. but not that feeder..not the $9.99 feeder..i would need the $49.99 feeder(no food included)!! what? i looked and found the bottom of the expensive one threaded to accept the cage. other than that, they were very much alike (powder coated steel vs, hard plastic). quickly i formulated a plan, and plopped a cage, and the $9.99 feeder on the counter, with a smug face and said.."we'll take this!". the ladies rallied, and ganged up on me. "no it wont work!" they clucked repeatedly. i said yes it will. and paid my $$ and left. several young couples gathered around me and asked me my plan. i took 12 inches of epoxy coated rebar tie wire out of my truck and tied the cage on. it was so rigid and secure...the young couple ran in and exchange for the 9.99 unit. i left them both some wire.

the birds have not yet discovered the feeder. not a single bird. it now hangs there, lonely. i assume they will show up. the squirrels are tenacious and entertaining on their own.

it will get better when my pellet rifle arrives. i will need to move the feeder to a lower location with a solid backstop..hahahah.

my wife is happy to be feeding the cute woodland creatures..and that is the most important part. i knew the hummingbird feeder she brought home last weekend was just the start...

We have 5 bird feeders. Two for humming birds, one for mixed seed, one for peanut butter and one for Niger thistle (finches love it) . We do through about 30 pounds of seed a month.

Wife and kids love birds. Gotta admit, they are nice to look at.

Hard to defeat squirrels.

There's a store somewhere that sells only bird feeders?

I have had the same bird feeder for 20 years. Made out of metal and powder coated. The ledge where the food comes out is counter balanced so if a squirrel steps on it, it closes. Works quite well.

My wife buys feed by the 50# bag. I think we feed most of the wildlife within a 5 mile radius, including bears. Drives me crazy but she has fun.

Mj has 2 hummingbird feeders and two seed feeders. The real hit has been her made from scratch suet. Here is her recipe, so I'll let her type it out:

2 c. quick cooking oats
2 c. cornmeal, yellow is best but white will do
1 c. flour
1/3 c. sugar
1 c. crunchy peanut butter
1 c. shortening

Mix dry ingredients. Melt together peanut butter and shortening then add to dry ingredients. Stir really well. Spoon into food storage boxes and freeze. Makes 3 or 4 which doesn't last long around here so I always make a double batch.

This is a good way to get rid of stale nuts too. Just coarsely shop and add to mixture.

Thank you Mj.....

I hang my seed feeders from a tree branch out at least 6 feet from the trunk and about 6 feet in the air. Higher and farther than the squirrels can jump. I hang them with fine wire like piano wire that has a lot of strength but way too fine for the squirrels to get a grip on to come down from the top. I feed the deer and turkeys too. They like cracked corn. So do blue jays.

Be careful, you might attract unwanted birds/creatures that like to peck on shiny objects. And their buddies

What are those things? Biggest thing we have on the West Coast is a the brown pelican. Egrets around here are half that size.

Is is a flamingo? No, I looked those up. Not the right beak.

We have a bird feeder, I like it. We have a bird bath too.

I just hung ours on one of those garden hooks. It's about 6 feet off the ground in the garden with a big swooping hook on the end.

It's pretty safe from the rodents, but there is a squirrel every know and then who tries to get it from one of the palms. He jumps and catches the rim, but never lands right and can't get on it.

It's funny to watch from the kitchen window.
Determined little sucker.

If we had squirrels I would have fun with one of these...

the birds at my feeders are sloppy enough that thesquirrels get all the seeds they want off the deck boards.

was gone all last week and all the feeders were empty. they can kill the bigger two in about two days. even the suet brick was almost all gone. reloaded sunday and so far only the chikadees squirrels have found out i'm back and reloaded. maybe the rest will be back later this week. have about 6-8 different types of birds that are regular visitors.

hummer feeders can last a few weeks this time of year...summer they will suck those down in a day when it hot.
