Shoe repair
I don't wear dress shoes much anymore. When I used to, I'd occasionally have the heels and soles replaced. Living/working in NYC at the time, it was a common thing.
I have a pair of shoes that need heels/soles. They're not great shoes by any means, but they're in decent shape and I don't see the need to get new ones. Went to the local guy and he wants $50 for heels and 1/2 soles. I know I am a CSOB, but these aren't $300 shoes. I think I could rationalize $35, but $50? Really? Am I out of line here?

Not that out of line. Keep in mind that the guys that do this sort of work are dying off.

Thanks for the info. You're right, shoe repair is a dying profession. It's a shame too because it's so wasteful to buy another pair of shoes.

How much do you think he makes an hour? Better yet, how much do you want him to make an hour? Remember this, he's not banging them out working 8 hours a day 5 days a week. 20 bucks must go to his over head.

I paid $30 over 10 years ago. Doesn't matter what type of shoes. It's the type of soles/heels they put on.

Just had 2 pair of husband's done for $55 total with a shine.
What kind of heel are they replacing it with. You can have a hard heel or a rubber heel. That could effect the price.

Had my fav dress shoes re-soled for $75. Worth it. They are great dress shoes and very comfortable. If I was going to replace them it would have cost me $150 and they would not be broken in.
Word to the wise, don't have them use a leather sole. My original had leather soles and while there are style advantages it is far better to go with a manmade material for the sole.

Ugh, used to always resole. Had a guy do a favorite pair of mine cheap. And what I got back was cheap. Instead of leather he used some hard flexible plastic that was thicker than the original leather and totally botched the profile/appearance of the shoe. And the stuff was super slippery even after roughing up the surface.
Sometimes you get what you pay for.

True - a good cobbler will offer a few options. My shoes now have a better sole then the originals and are 100% more comfortable.

What really pissed me off was the profile. The previous sole stopped a hair short of the profile/outline when viewing the shoe from the top. The plastic crap extended past the original profile by an 1/8 to 3/16. Totally changed the look of the shoe.
