Question on job recruiter wanting information...

I've posted my resume on Careerbuilder and Monster, and just got a call from a staffing agency/recruiter for a job here in Charleston at the site where they are building the new Boeing plant. He followed up our conversation with an email asking for a "Authorization for Background Invvestigation" It asks for name, address, DOB, SS#, etc so they can run a background check.

He just called again to see if I received it, so he could process it before 4PM. It's 2:49Pm local time. What's the rush?

What to you think? Scam or maybe legit?

It's screaming scam to me. Why would a recruiter need this?

Here's the email, form and their website:

Thanks for talking with me James.
I think you may be a perfect fit for this position!
Please reply wit ha reference, and the attached document.

Seems fishy. The background check is for the employer once they narrow down the selection and decided that they will hire you, pending a good outcome of your background check. Never had anyone but the employer ask me for SSN.

Background checks are not uncommon.

I would try to verify the company/source/individual before sending any info.

FWIW the times I've had to do this I have been notified directly by the prospective employer that such'n'such will be contacting me for the info.

Recruiters asking for SSN is legit? I get calls from headhunters all the time. Never has one asked for that, only an updated resume and contact info of others who may be interested in the position. I say scam.

Heck the NCIC background check to buy a gun doesn't require the SSN - it can help prevent delays, but it is not required.

What concerns me about this is that it doesn't say anything about the security of the information. There is nothing that protects you. How is the distribution of the information is limited? Who has access to it? How is it kept secure, if at all? Does the employer get a report from the agency, or does the agency turn your whole file over to them?

Tell him your gonna also copy your friend who works for the DA who needs a better job as well - see what he does...

Thanks guys. This is the first call I've received from a person who could speak ENGLISH. A couple of others sounded like they were from India. No thanks. Emails have come in with offers to be a financial advisor (WTF do I know about finance?), processing payments (scam) and forwarding packages from overseas (scam). Careerbuilder and Monster seem to be waste of time.

Paul,

I'm afraid the whole idea is a scam. I could hear people in the background talking, when I was talking to "Jordan". Made me think of a boiler room of people making calls. Paul Baldaccini
could be Jordan for all I know.

I think I'm going to tell the guy I'm not comfortable with giving my info out, but to an employer with an offer.

Checking Google, I see A Check America is in Riverside CA. They have a data base of pre screened applicants that employers can tap into. Looks legit. If I were closer, I'd drive over there and see what kind of office they have. Other than what you can see on Google Earth.

I missed the part about the head hunter staffing his own temp pool. If that's the case, it may be legit since they would be your employer, but I would make sure they only use your information for this job and only this once unless another comes along in the area with them.

I suppose you can check with the state they are registered in for a business license.

Check with JeremyD. He's I'm the staffing biz and is int eg SE. He might be able to help determinine if this firm is legit.

Good luck man.

Jordan called right after I sent an email saying the info was a no go. I didn't answer, so he left a VM for me say that he understood, but he would like a copy of my resume and a couple of references. Called him back to confirm my apprehension, but agreed to send the resume, etc.

I guess we'll see what happens now...

A930Rocket 12-06-2010 12:23 PM

It's a 10-12 month job, but what the heck, it might lead to something else...

A930Rocket 12-06-2010 12:55 PM

10-4. I've been looking at various places to get on either building the plant and/or a job at Boeing.

Just don't give out your SS number...

A930Rocket 12-06-2010 02:11 PM

No info besides name, number and address went out.

He must be in a hurry. He's already called one of my references.

A930Rocket 12-06-2010 02:14 PM

My son swims year round with the son of the guy who's heading up the entire Boeing 787 operation here. I met the fellow last month when the boys were leaving for a swim meet. He and his wife were as down to earth and as nice as could be.

Wanted to ask him about a job, but felt it was not cool...

azasadny 12-06-2010 05:04 PM

I work for an IT staffing company. We only request a background check once the client (hiring company) has made an offer to the candidate (you). Seems fishy...
