Droid Tethering

Motorola Droid gen 1, with Android 2.2 OS, build FRG22D. Verizon is the carrier.

Verizon wants $15/month on top of the $30 data chage to use the built in tethering..

I installed PDAnet tethering from the Market, set it up on my laptop, and gave it a test run, works well..

Question is, will Verizon (Big Brother) know I am using a third party tethering app and charge me? I grew out of rooting these things and just need the tethering so I can video skype with my wife occasionally when I cant find free wi-fi, or net access when I am away from home... BTW wife is in Beijing now

Good question. The better Q is; do they really care? I mean, they gave Palm a break on the tethering charge (the Palm Pre plus tethers w/o the $15 extra charge).

Obviously V would like to charge as much money as possible , but they know that the techno savvy aren't going to pay it. -better to keep that $100+/month revenue stream than blow it by demanding $115+ PER MONTH.

I've been tethering via my gen 1 droid and pdanet for months without an issue from verizon.

The guy at Verizon told me about pdanet, and he uses it. Showed me how it works in the store. So I guess they don't care.

Just build your usage slow.

Like all things it will bother them when the app goes mass market. and they see money going out the window.

They can break the app with a firmware upgrade or just audit usage and look for spikes.

Not planning on using this app a lot, just on those occasions when I can't find some free wifi or net access, on occasion..

Interesting. I've installed tethering on my iPhone, but don't use it. Maybe I should.

If the droid had a front mounted camera, I would never had brought this up..

Droid has a Skype app, and I call my wife every day, with no penalty to my minute usage..

Seeing her on video is really nice..hence the need to tether when I am in obscure areas where I only have phone service..

Will launch the tethered video skype call from the comfort of the cab of my F250 PSD tomorrow ..
