I used this sauce for some ribs I made a few weeks ago. People liked this tangy sauce. While cooking it, it smells more vinegary than it tastes.

For sauce
1 1/2 cups chopped onion (from 1 large)
6 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped peeled fresh ginger
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups ketchup
1/2 cup cider vinegar
6 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3/4 teaspoon black pepper

Make sauce while ribs bake:
Cook onion, garlic, and ginger in oil in a 2-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 6 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes.
Purée sauce in 2 or 3 batches in a blender until smooth (use caution when blending hot liquids). Set aside 1 cup sauce for serving with ribs.

This is a very good sauce... I made a few batches and tweaked the recipe a bit... add some Habenero so you break a sweat..

From America's Test Kitchen:

1 onion , chopped fine
4 garlic cloves , minced
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 1/4 cups ketchup
3/4 cup brewed coffee
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Cook onion in a little oil until soft, about 10 minutes. Add garlic and chili powder, cook for about 30 seconds. Stir in remaining ingredients and simmer until thickened, about 15 minutes.

i dont subscribe to america's test kitchen..but they have a simple version that starts with a bottle of store bought sauce. i believe they use KC masterpiece..and add to it. i copied them and you end up with a vat of very good homemade tasting sauce.

this sounds really good.
if you were to add some bourbon i think it would be great.
one shot for the pot and one for the cook.

Not your typical too-sweet sauce, but very good if you make it really spicy... like nose-bleed hot:

1 small yellow onion, or ½ large one
Garlic 5-10 cloves, to taste
Worcestershire sauce, 5 to 6 TB to start, more to taste
Liquid smoke, similar to W. sauce in quantity
Ketchup, 1 to 1 ½ bottles
Cayenne or habanero, to taste
Brown sugar, 5 TB to start?

wait a second..good juicey, smokey pulled pork?

i usually make a simple "juice" for pulled pork sammies. pickle juice, mixed with some good mustard. touch of sugar if it is very tart. put it in a squeeze bottle, and serve it up with the pulled pork sandwiches.

For the record, lots of prize winning sauces are based on Kraft original BBQ sauce. Some use KCC masterpiece original.

Take that and add whatever custom fixes you want and you will end up with a pretty darned good sauce.
For pork I like adding like worchestershire, dry mustard, crushed red peppers, dark brown sugar, a little liquid smoke, a tad of teriyaki, and pineapple juice.
For poultry, I add some sage and rosemary.
It changes a little very time I make it.

I also make sauces from scratch and although unique, I can't say they are better than the kraft based sauce.

I've never come up with a carolina sauce i was happy with so I stick to the tomato-based instead of the vinegar stuff.
