Good humor at my dad's funeral

My dad loved Cheerios. He had been eating them every day of his life since he was about twelve years old. Well about a year ago he couldn't eat them any more because he had to have a feeding tube put in. That was the only food that he really missed. He was 81 when he died.
Well, one of my sisters decided to send him into the after life with his favorite thing. She tucked a fresh box into his casket.

R.I.P. Dad... and don't eat the whole box in one sitting.

That's cool...a fond remembrance, and a bit of humor.

My condolences on your loss. Nice touch.

My Dad played and loved baseball. As they lowered the casket, everyone was asked to join in singing "Take me out to the ballgame". It still brings a tear to my eye thinking about it.

Nice touch. When the time comes I want my son to tap a keg as the pyre is lit under me.

We buried a lawyer here a few years back. If one looked closely, you could just see a small bottle of whiskey in his coat pocket.

Nice! My sisters decided to bury my mom in her jogging suit and sneakers since that's what she always wore. Dad, was in his Eastern Airlines uniform... flying was his life.

At least he won't get hungry.

My dad always wore a Hawaiian shirt and shorts owned his own business so he dressed how he wanted. I wore a Hawaiian shirt, one of his and shorts and my friends all wore Hawaiian shirts. Amidst a sea of black suits and dresses we stood out as beacon of color.

We went to the funeral parlor to check out my dad. The old cowboy was almost not recognizable to me or my brother and sister without his hat. We arranged to have him buried wearing his Stetson. The mortician/funeral director had never heard of anyone being buried wearing a hat. Of the many hundreds of mourners, not one mentioned it. I don't think may people even realized he was wearing it.

I am holding up okay. I think I have mentally been prepared for awhile now. He had been on a major down slope for the last year or more. He is happy and free now.
The box "O" Cheerios was what kept me level at my dad's service. Even my mom, when she was at the casket saying her goodbyes to her soul mate of 59 years, went from tears to laughter as we pulled up the lower curtin (sp?) and showed her the "box".
We sent him along with a few other things too. My daughter made a origami crane for him.

Dan,

Excellent!

Funerals are a roller coaster for the emotions. Hard enough to say "Goodbye" even when you expect the person's passing. The crane and Cheerios mean so much in terms of memories about your Dad.

A good buddy was laid out this summer in the clothes he wore when we played gigs together. His wife placed his hockey club ball caps on the casket, then turned and presented his 'Guitars Through The Years' t-shirt to me. That was rough, but she said he wanted me to have it. Damn.

Keep the memories.
Les
