LOL They are ugly as hell and big, bulky, and heavy....but they do actually work, and work well. Especially for the money. Their 995 Carbines are actually really sweet shooters, and dirt cheap. |
Ordered my Parkerizing kit today...
I ordered this kit:

back on topic....
|
My brother-in-law and I were going to Parkerize his Jennings J22 pistol to practice, but we decided not to do that. I'm going to get everything ready next weekend and then hopefully Parkerize the M1911A1 the following weekend, provided the gunsmith is done sandblasting the gun by then. Hopefully, the gun will be reassembled and test fired on Easter weekend.
|
be sure to post pics. Your package went out today. Sorry I had a busy weekend, two gigs in 3 days.
|
David,
Thanks for the Rig grease! I've been greasing up the guns and waiting for the Parkerizing kit to arrive and I hope to get the M1911A1 back this week from the sandblaster. My wife donated an electric roaster with a nice temperature gauge, so I can get the solution to the proper temp and keep it there for the Parkerizing process. I'll also be using a candy-making thermometer to verify the temps and I hope to have the final prep work done next Saturday, then Parkerize on Sunday. I'll plan on reassemblying the gun on Easter weekend. |
My wife called and told me the Parkerizing kit arrived safe and sound and the gunsmith will have the pistol sandblasted by Wednesday, so when I head back home Thursday night after my work week here in Okemos, I'll start the prep work for Parkerizing this weekend! I'll take pictures of the entire process in case anyone else here wants to try it...
|
Ordered this kit on the 5th of April and it arrives on the 11th, not bad at all!!
Large Grey Firearms Kit |
That's great news Art and I'm looking forward to your post. Please. promise me you will be extra careful.
|
David,
I will be very careful! I'll do the Parkerizing out in the "man cave" (garage). I have very good ventilation out there, excellent lighting and some adult supervision (my neighbors). You should receive your .223 Remington "care package" today! |
Art,
How is the gout? |
Thanks for asking! I have almost constant low-level pain that I take Aleve for. Last night was difficult to sleep because of the pain. I'm still on the 300mg of Allopurinol and my SUA is 4.3, so I shouldn't be having this pain, if I understand this ailment correctly...

Back from the sandblaster...
I picked up the M1911A1 from the sandblaster this afternoon after work...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734432.jpg The darker spots are grease to prevent rust until it's degreased immediately prior to Parkerizing.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734477.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734565.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734607.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734668.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734714.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734767.jpg |
Back from the sandblaster...Pt 2.
More pics...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734867.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734898.jpg These parts didn't get sandblasted because the gunsmith felt they were too "fragile"... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302734930.jpg I'll be home again tomorrow evening and I'll start the Parkerizing and take pics of the progress this weekend... |
The only bad spot on the entire gun is on the edge of the slide, below the ejection port. The gunsmith didn't touch it, although I asked him to fix it if he could. He wasn't there when I picked up the gun today, so he must have decided not to touch the slide. The entire gun was sandblasted for $55, which I think is very reasonable.
|
Art, What are the reasons for the ventilation during the parkerizing? Noxious fumes? Acid?
If you were in Houston I would just let you do the job under our fume hood at work. Saves me every darn day from HF. Please, please post pics! |
Tom, Thanks for the kind offer! I read that the fumes produced are pretty nasty and can give you a headache, etc... so I'll be doing this in the garage. My garage is detached and at the rear of our lot. The whole thing shouldn't take very long, I just need to bring the solution up to the proper solutions slowly, then dip the parts for 10-15 minutes. I don't have the directions here with me, but I'll follow them carefully as I really don't want to screw anything up on this pistol.
|
You are going to use an organic vapors mask, aren't you?
|
Tom,
Yep, that's on my list as well as nitrile gloves...I have an "old school" surgical gown (slightly used) that I'll wear, as well. I'll look like Dr Frankenstein!! |
Looks great so far Art. I gotta see pics of you in the mask the gloves and gown. Come on do it. Sorry your smith didn't fix that rough spot for ya. You need a better smith ;-)
|
Just got my "thank you" package from Art for restoring his Rem. M51. He hand loaded me enough .223 for me to zero my new .223 plus kill every groundhog in the whole damn county. You da man Art! Thanks!
I love this place. |
I'm glad you're happy with the "thank you" package! I wanted to send you that since I got the Model 51 back... Enjoy!
|
Could not be happier. Thanks Art yer a good guy.

Art, if you want me to get the Fleet Marine chesty for you, my pleasure...you earned and deserve it. |
Paul,
Thanks for the very kind offer, but I think I'll get one online and put it with my "veteran stuff". I didn't know that the FMF designation was approved in 2006. When I got mine, it was just a ribbon, although mine does have the "eagle, globe and anchor" in the middle because I served with the USMC during war time, or whatever they called Desert Storm. |
The gout kicked my butt from Wed until today so nothing got done on the pistol this weekend.
|
How about you let me get it for you, as a token of my respect?
Then we'll both have a new sea story...and you never buy the first device you earn. I got my first set of wings from a friend of my fathers. Instant SS:cool: Best with the gout, Brother. Quote:
|
Paul,
Thanks, but only if you let me send you some hand loaded ammo! |
Quote:
I'll be in touch. |
Getting over the latest gout attack, so I'm probably not going to get anything done on the M1911A1 until next weekend. My work assignment in Okemos, MI ends this Friday and I'm starting at a new client site on May 2nd, so lots of stuff going on right now.
|
That's Ok. Take your time and be patient. You will do a much better job. It's not like you have a client waiting for his gun. It's a hobby. Have a happy Easter.
|
David,
Thanks, you too!! |
Honey, I Parkerized the M1911A1!! multiple parts...
Well, today was the day... Parkerized the M1911A1 that I had sandblasted and prepped..
Brought the solution up to 190 degrees... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305416392.jpg The tank... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305416462.jpg Degreaser that came with the kit, I used this after the acetone dip... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305416509.jpg Parts soaking in acetone (degrease) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305416561.jpg Final degreasing... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305416624.jpg Final degreasing... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305416687.jpg Final rinse in hot water, ready for the Parkerizing tank http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305416753.jpg |
Honey, I Parkerized the M1911A1!! pt 2
Degreased parts, in hot water, waiting for the tank to reach 190 degrees...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417267.jpg A watched Parkerizing tank never boils (or reaches 190 degrees)... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417378.jpg Parts go in... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417431.jpg Bubblin'... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417484.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417530.jpg All parts are in... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417577.jpg Parts come out after 30min and go into hot water rinse... Honey, I Parkerized the M1911A1!! pt 3
Beth sacrificed her roaster so I could have a Parkerizing tank...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417785.jpg Tools of the day... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417870.jpg The chemicals... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417928.jpg Important fashion accessories... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305417997.jpg I even read these and followed them closely... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305418053.jpg The parts after their rinse in hot water, the "black coating" is like a very thick, carbon that has to be cleaned off. Very stubborn, I must say... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305418180.jpg It came off the frame pretty easily, but the slide is another matter altogether... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305418265.jpg All parts are soaking in oil tonight and tomorrow I'll get the gun cleaned up, greased with Rig (thanks David!) and get it reassembled... Doing this in the garage with excellent ventilation helped and the "tong method" was really easy. The teflon-coated electric roaster got up to 190 degrees and stayed there, which is very important. The candy thermometer and brewing thermometer were both used to make sure the solution stayed at 190 degrees. So far, so good... |
clap clap clap clap clap! Bravo! Well done Art! Also a great photo journal. Great job!
Oh...and you have a great wife too. |
by the way what are you using to card off the velvet?
|
I have a couple of 1903 Colts that suffered from some neglect in the past so I tried two different methods of restoration. Both projects proved to be very rewarding.
The first one got disassembled, bead blasted, in-house electroless nickle and the trigger was sent out to be gold plated. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305434161.jpg The second was disassembled, bead blasted and sent to john @ DC camshafts where he Parkerized the pieces for me. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1305434207.jpg |
Henry, Those 1903's are beautiful!!
David, Thanks! What should I use to remove the "crystals"? Bronze wool and oil? |
I guess in my Parkerizing research, I missed the part about the process after the parts have been soaking in oil, after the Parkerizing has been completed and the rinse has stopped the process. All of the reading I've done basically said "oil the parts and reassemble the gun" with no mention of "carding off the velvet-like" black crystals left on the metal surfaces...
I thought I would take the parts out of the tank and they would be all pretty and gray... I'm cautious at this point because I don't want to screw up the work that has been done thus far, so I'm thinking I'll lightly apply oiled bronze wool and carefully remove the black coating. It's mostly off the frame, but the slide looks pretty crusty and blotchy. I really hope this project tuens out! |
