I don't and I've only seen cab drivers do it and I've yet to meet a cab driver who seemed knowledgeable about anything especially driving. I'm sure there must be one or two out there.

On the other hand, my wife sits at a stoplight with her car in gear and her foot on the clutch. I don't dare suggest she change her ways. I just change the clutch when she wears it out and keep my mouth shut :D

I see guys doing this on bikes, too. Worried about breaking the clutch cable or something, I guess. I'm more worried about getting run over by someone coming up behind who is asleep at the wheel, so I keep it in gear with one eye on the rear view mirror.

Sometimes I like to pick my nose with my left hand at lights. :)

My bike has a really stiff clutch, so I usually go into Neutral. It's also really slow, so I;m not scooting if I have to.

My brother puts it in "N" in every car/truck he has owned. It drives me nuts.
He just got his tranny rebuilt. Gee dumbazz wonder why:rolleyes:

My little LUPO is an Automatic (my first car so equipped.)

I don't put it into Nuetral, but I sometimes put into Park at a long light or at a train crossing.
Many NYC Cabbies do this, for me it's a rest for my leg, I never thought about the transmission.

But now I'm curious if this might somehow be a bad idea? I only do it once I know the cars behind me have stopped as I realize this makes the BRAKE lights go out.

Only will kill the throw out bearing. If you are lucky though, the clutch will wear (normally) before the throw out bearing goes bad. Just make sure you change the TOB at the time the clutch comes out. :)

My wife grew up on a farm. Nothing she can't shift or shifts incorrectly, including a worn out 915. :D

When you move the shift lever from here to there, all that you move is a plate with a mountain of grooves and passageways machine in to it to direct fluid flow where desired. You do not move any gears or synchronizers at all.

When you move the selector from neutral to drive you open a valve that pressurizes a piston that engages a clutch pack that momentarily slips until the torque converter stalls.
