What is everyone using for hands free cell phone device?

Begining Jan 1st the State of Delaware will require hands free cell phone devices while driving. I'm a dinosaur when it comes to cell phones and electronic gadgets. I have seen the earpiece devices and I'm not crazy about having one stuck in my ear. Then there are the hard wired devices like the Parrot CK3000 which I have read about. What is everyone using. What would you suggest and which ones would you stay away from.

Thanks in advance.

I use a Plantronics.

Joeaksa 12-15-2010 07:08 AM

Bang & Olufsen bluetooth. Best mic and headset I have found.

TechnoViking 12-15-2010 07:12 AM

I've been using the same rubber band for a while now.

I'm interested in a device that lives in the car, connects by Bluetooth to my phone, and gives me hands-free via speaker/mic. Any good experiences there, especially with good noise-cancelling and audio quality?

I have tried to use Bluetooth earpieces, I lose them too easily at $70 a pop.

This is what I am thinking as well. Loosing/sitting on sunglasses has been an irritant I'd rather not duplicate.

I think Techno might be on to something here when it comes to expense.

I just looked at the Plantronics K-100 online and it doesn't involve any hard wiring into the car. It clips to the sunvisor. I am wondering about sound quality/interference though.

I've seen some the live in the 12v outlet... are these really any better than using the phone's speaker?

island911 12-15-2010 09:11 AM

+1 Plantronics. ...Voyager, iirc.

If you want good noise-canceling you will be paying for it.

However, my phone (HTC TouchPro2) has a great stand-alone speakerphone. When on speaker, it uses two mic's (separate from the regular phone mic)and employs some very good noise cancellation. link

I wonder if you have better enforcement in Delaware. We've had the hands-free law in California for about two years now. After an initial decline in people holding the phone to their ears, the effect seems to have completely worn off. I see as many people driving around with a phone against their heads now as before the law was passed. Quite simply, it's a very low priority for law enforcement and the fine is certainly not a deterrent.

I'm glad to see you are willing to take the steps necessary to make driving while on the phone safer. Just don't be surprised if you find that in a few months you are surrounded, again, by drivers with their phones glued to their ears.

I just bought 2 new Motorola H730 ear pieces. I cannot stand having something stuck in my ear. It causes pain after a little while. The noise canceling on these is great, plus you flip it open to connect/turn on. It can sit in your pocket and not drain.

For in the car the Ford Sync system works great. There have to be decent stereo's out there that can do this.

Paul_Heery 12-15-2010 09:41 AM

I have a MOTOROKR T505 - Motorola

I love this unit. I can play my music library on my phone through my car stereo. When someone calls me, the phone takes over. My voice is picked up by the microphone that is directly above me in the car and the caller's voice plays through my car speakers. You can buy these for around $50.

I have a Cindy...she manages the phone while I'm driving. If I'm alone and driving? Phone is off....that is, if I remember to take it. As often as not, the phone remains off, sitting on a shelf here...

....

For the consideration of those who have to hear you, I'll suggest the Plantronics. ...both my wife and I had a few of those Jawbones. Great in-ear audio, but not as good (as the Plantronics) for the person on the other end. esp in noisy/windy environments.

Also, I'm not sure that model Jawbone use the higher bandwidth bluetooth standards. ...and then there's the problem of accidentally ending the call, when trying to push the device back into the ear. :-/

This is a very small state with a very large, and aggressive police presence, both local and state. It'll be enforced. $50 first offense, $200 second time. Of course there are always the ones who will not pay attention to the rules. I don't need the aggravation, and I spend at lot of work time on the phone between the house and job. Its time to get one.

I'm leaning towards the speaker type. Something that could go between cars would be ideal.

I have my great great grandfathers ears and literally have to shave inside my ear canal every other day and I'm thinking that sticking an ear plug in would just be irritating after awhile.

RedBeard, does the Motorola H730 stick inside your ear or just sit along the outside.

pwd72s 12-15-2010 11:16 AM

Oregon has a similar law...They must be making a bundle, $100 fine at a time, because every time I go somewhere I spot somebody violating the law...

GH85Carrera 12-15-2010 11:19 AM

I just hang up the phone and drive!

Scuba Steve 12-15-2010 11:24 AM

Regular Motorola bluetooth set works for me. It doesn't exactly go in the ear, sort of around it a bit.

Not inside, it rests against your ear hole..

I also have a Plantronics, had a few, non have worked as well for me as the current Jawbone, and I have had better luck with this on my bike rides than I had with the Plantronics...

Mine came with interchangable rings, so I just tested until I found one that felt right.. I also like the fact that the Jawbone has caller ID, so I don't have to look at my phone, plus, when I get calls, it rings in my ear piece, so it doesn't disturb anyone else, I just walk away & take the call..

How does that work? Does a voice tell you who is calling?

scottmandue 12-15-2010 02:19 PM

BlueAnt thing you clip to your visor... I also can't stand having something stuck in my ear.

Amazon.com: BlueAnt Supertooth 3 Bluetooth Speakerphone (Black) Bulk Packaging: Electronics

My new Hyundai has blue tooth built in so no problemo.

And yes just as many people here in Cali holding the phone to their ear... or holding it in front of their face using speakerphone.

That's what I kinda tried to say earlier. Looks like we're outnumbered here...

I believe some of the nay-sayers on ear pieces aren't gainfully employed or don't have a job where they need to communicate. In the time I drive to and from work, I can start / finish business which allows me to shave about an hour off my work day. I have no trouble driving while talking. It isn't any different than having a passenger.

Anyway, the OP asked which bluetooth. I had a Motorola and it sucked bad - especially for the other side. It did not cancel background noise well at all. Now I have a Plantronics Voyager that works well. It costs under $30 at Costco including a 12V and 110V charger.

I don't use a cell in my 911. In the GMC Yukon truck I have an integrated Parrot system that works with my On Star/Bose stereo. I ditched On Star because of their crappy rates.
