Michigan Cycling Guys

Anybody remember the name of the shop in Cadillac, MI in the 70's. It was right downtown. It was run by an old Italian guy who was a former Olympic and/or US Cycling Team coach. The shop was there for years and they may have had a mail order catalog. Sold a lot of obscure Italian stuff like Guerciotti, Olmo, etc. Thanks!

Gene Portuesi's Cyclo-Pedia Shop and Catalog I think is what you are thinking of.

Absolutely. The big one that we used to order from was Bikecology which later became Supergo I think. Here's a PDF scan of their 1978 catalog. Big file, might take time to load.

And here's some scans of the CycloPedia catalog from 1974.

I have known Ron McVay, the owner of Pedal Pushers since the 70s, a few years back I helped him liquidate some of the bikes he still had.. Pedal Pushers was "THE" bike shop for BMX, and he had a big part of getting the sport started in FL.. He is the one with the Green Flag.(I'm #2 on the line).

Some of his bikes that he was selling..

Bikecology did become Supergo. there were a couple of their retail stores here in Santa Monica. I don't know why the name change, because they carry some stuff in their books called Supergo already.

Did Pedal Pusher become Bike Nashbar?

No, Ron burned out on bikes, sold the building and got into commercial real estate, he may have some stuff left..

I still have a set of the original Look pedals on my Cilo

Not too many people have heard of Cilo. I I remember a poster of Urs Furer (can't remember how to spell it) riding a Cilo. Is that a 3 Rensho track bike in that pic there? I wanted their road bike so badly.

Nashbar was originally Bike Warehouse and located in Ohio (Youngstown I believe). At one point they opened several retail clearance stores, one of those in the Detroit area. Didn't last long.

Re: Bikecology catalog. My brother ordered a Bob Jackson road frame from them right around 1978. It's shown in that catalog. He still has it up in his attic. Hardly ever ridden.

Yeah, Nashbar was in Youngstown, I stopped there on my way to Detroit one year for the Formula One race in the mid 80s.

Curt, did you know Jack Havercamp in Bay City? He had a small shop over by the old Belinda St. bridge. He's built up a lot of pretty exotic Italian bikes over the years.

Nashbar... yuck... they always seemed to specialize in cheap crap and mediocre OEM components.
Supergo was cool 10-15 years ago, when they would clear out the previous year's high-end parts. I got some cool stuff from them.

Jeeez, I wonder if he's the guy who bought my Paramount frame many moons ago? Should have never sold that one.
