How much of a data plan do you need for just email?

Put wife and step daughter on my phone plan to save a few bucks.

They got androids, minimum data plan is for 200MB.

Wife says she has already used over 100MB so we should bump her to unlimited data plan.

SD has only used about 12MB

Wife does send a lot of still pictures back and forth with email... but that seems like a heck of a lot of data just for email.

What say ye PPOT tech gurus?

Thanks,

i love smartphones and use the technology quite a bit
i have a $40 unlimited data plan and $5 for 250 texts
i'm about 2/3 thru this billing period
and i have used over 200 mb of data so far. i use it a lot for email and web
and maybe a 75 texts/photos send a lot of photos between the family this time of year

i am on the phone all day in the office, so the last thing i want to do is use my cell to talk to people its time to be face to face so my actual phone minutes are quite small...i dont think i ever come close to the 450minutes of talk my plan has

She has not been using web browsing (much) mostly just email/talk/text.

We have a family plan with 750 shared minutes, unlimited text.

200MB just seems like a lot just for email... Look at the step daughter, she won't get close to using half the minimum data plan she is on, and she is 16!

Back in the day I seem to remember emails being in the KB range... been eons since I looked at the size of an email.

I have a 200 MB plan from AT&T. My android phone is smart enough that if I am in reach of a wifi hotspot, it will use that therefore no taxing the cellular data network. That being said, 8 hours at the office with wifi, home with wifi, and I come in at about 25MB per month usage.

8 hours at the office is actually not right. I am on the road quite a bit (commercial real estate broker) and I receive about 200 e-mails a day, but I am not pinging up against that limit.

I do not download attachments until I am on a computer. No use looking at contracts on a cell phone.

well with verizon each one of those is a different plan
so you would need to look at what your are using now and adjust.

my text rate was taking a hit lately, i was getting close $5 on the each pay plan, and photos were a big part of it so i just went with program that covered my needs plus extra.

This is what I'm talking about... no way is she getting 200 emails a day, probably maybe 200 a month... yet half way through the month she is over 100MB of usage.

You can probably figure that an 'average' picture these days is 1MB, maybe more, maybe less, and an 'average' mp3 or something is 5 MB.

So, if she's checking email a lot, and a friend sends her an email with an mp3 that says "Listen to this!!!" then there's 5Mb. And, you don't get to decide if it was worth it or not until you open the email.

Also, downloading 'apps' for your phone is data, and using the apps is data, too. google, Yelp, restaurant finders, GPS map, anything.

If she is using it primarily for email she would not come close to that 200mb limit (unless she is sending like 50% pictures). Even then, you can send pictures in all sorts of quality, and there is no need to send a full size picture most of the time.

I surf the web frequently, stream some music, and get 50+ emails per day and I am only using between 300-500mb per month.

I'm hoping Verizon doesn't kick me off of the unlimited plan... last time I went on a run I was streaming Pandora the entire time!
