This weekend's garage sale find: Pair of Bose 901s with EQ for $25.

I'm not a huge Bose fan, but for being almost as old as me and costing $25 they're awesome.

The trick is finding an amp with the cassette loop in order to use them these days.

Nice find! I probably built the drivers (speakers) for those. I worked for Bose in the mid 70's in the driver production line for many years. Sure wish I had stayed with them.

Good find, great price if you like 'em. Just thinking of re-coning all those drivers makes me cringe. hehe

On a similar note, this weekend I picked up a beautiful OLD pair of Klipsch Heresy speakers from an old lady who only listened to opera. Put them out in our guest cabana. Yes, the T-35's are beamy, but for out there and around the pool you can drive them to crush level with a clock radio. Very efficient little bastards.

Can you explain the "cassette loop" issue further.

In the late 70's a local cool h.s. teacher had a pair of those hanging from the ceiling in his house. They were the first good speakers I ever heard.

EQ's need a tape loop to function - most modern amps and receivers don't have this feature anymore.

Damn 901's were THE speakers to have in the '70's!

These are series I 901s, which mean there were built between 1968 and 1973. I guess the good news is that the speaker surrounds are cloth. The grills don't come off, but I did get a peak at one of the front drivers and it looks like new.

The tape loop is required to hook up the equalizer... and the equalizer is required for the speakers to sound good - without it they really don't sound that good at all. From what I've read, buying a set of old 901s without the proper EQ is a waste of money. My Pioneer Elite VSX-41 isn't that old, but has a monitor loop. The early 901s were sealed so they're not the picture of efficiency.

I surprised your receiver has a monitor loop, I have the Elite VSX-81 which doesn't.

Must be a cost cutting measure.

I just checked the owner's manual... looks like you have a monitor loop.

I see you have a recording out/in, but what I don't see is the 'monitor' button that lets me switch between the source and recording, which allows the EQ to work.

Thanks for the heads up, I will check into that. I was trying to hook up an older eq last year and I even corresponded with Pioneer tech support about it, they said it was not possible.

Lee,
I just remembered why my receiver doesn't have a monitor loop button. My unit is THX certified and if they allowed any looping, it would invalidate the certification. At least that is what the tech told me.

I bought a pair of 901's in 1980... they were cool in the pseudo-audiophile ranks lol...

Anyway in 1996 or so I happened to pull the grill off one of the speakers.. and noticed the surrounds on all the speakers were toast..

So I wrote a nastygram to Bose mentioning how I though speakers which I paid around $1200 should last me forever...

Bose replied that they were aware of some speakers of the 901 series I owned had inferior material....

They said send em back.. we will ship you new ones.. In all there was some sort of fee iirc $350, but I got a brand new set of 901's

I like that sort of customer service...
