Jeep 2011 Cherokee

thoughts?

it has an air adjustable suspension now - you can go down to 7.6" gnd. clearance for the Hwy, or up to 10.7"

(assuming the thing works - and I gather the VW, Porsche, Audi history on these things is not so hot)

It is a Chrysler product. Check consumer reports. It will fail in many ways you didn't even know existed before getting such a vehicle. Fuel economy is very poor for a mid size SUV. Depreciation on these is horrid too. I would stay way from any active suspension, no matter who makes it. If you want ground clearance, just buy a vehicle that has it.

There you go!

I drove the new Jeep and all those ads about how they "wanted to make it right" and "increase quality" are spot on correct. I've owned tons of Jeeps and most have been wonderful vehicles that I sold around 160K. The problem isn't that they have any odd failures its that even from new they were rattly. Not this one. This Jeep is a new standard that in my opinion felt better than things like X5's. I would buy if I was in the market for a Jeep but I'm not at the moment.

I had a new 2011 Cherokee all this week and did lots off roading with it in Illinois and Indiana and I was VERY impressed with it. Drove beautifully and had great performance and equipment levels. Great driver position and comfy seats. I was getting an easy 350miles per tank and it would cruise at 80mp/h with ease. It left me impressed, especially if it stayed reliable as it aged.
Good product!

Isn't it sharing the same platform as the Mercedes Benz model, with the exception of the engine?

I am not buying the "this one is better than all the old shyte we made" until these have 3 years on them and we can see what people say at consumer reports. It is good to hear that they aren't ratty right out of the hole, however.

So, if the quality is better it still remains a fact that depreciation is very steep and their gas mileage stinks. Then they will make a good 2-3 year old car to buy with 40k miles at half price of new.

I had my bad experience with a Jeep Grand Cherokee (2000), but when I talk to other Jeep owners, they are happy.

That year was a lemon. My Grandparents and Great Grandparents purchased one each. Both cars had problems.

I have, and it's very nice, looks very strong. MPG is...well...awful, even with the V6, but that would be my only complaint.

The other American-made vehicle I'd look at in its class is the new Explorer. It's also very nice inside and out - completely redesigned. And the turbo 4 is supposedly more powerful than the old 4.6 V8.

In all, I'm more excited by American auto products than I think I have ever been in the past.

I like the looks. There's a lot of X5 influence.

I'm sure it's a great vehicle but every time I hear "air suspension" I just shake my head and wonder why another manufacturer is headed down that road. They fail on cars, trucks, mountain bikes...waste of time.

Air suspension is totally optional on Jeep. Personally, once I rode in my first air suspension vehicle I almost believe it should be mandatory above a certain base price. Its a humungous improvement over springs. Air suspensions are incredibly simple so repairs aren't difficult if you can wrench.

Actually, it was a GRAND Cherokee.

The Cherokee is a totally different vehicle, that is only made in China.

I've had 4 GC's, 94, 95, 98, 2000. Have all been great SUV's. Nice size, too, not huge, but not a pretend SUV on a auto platform.

I have had 5 GC's in the past. I love the size and how well they do off road. I hate the cheap inside materials and below average gas mileage for an SUV.

We had an '87 - put 188k miles on it with nothing but oil changes/filters and plugs.

still thinking about this thing - the ins. co. may total my Sube so this would let me get to some areas that the Sube could not reach

OTOH, if it is spendy & may not do as well on the hwy as a car...

another alternative would be the small BMW SUV, but no adjustable ride ht. with that one
