Free way to convert FLV to something like avi or mp4?

Anyone know of a good reliable way to convert flv video files to something like mp4 or avi?

I've got the Space Shuttle Ascent video downloaded in flv format, but I'd like to burn it to a DVD for my little cousin that went to watch the launch with me in May. To burn it to DVD, I need it in another format that my DVD program can handle.

Thanks

nevermind. I kept finding crappy progs. I finally found a site that said "use ffmpeg, it's command line only."

I have used this, works well, and GUI driven:

Free Flv to AVI MPEG WMV Converter - convert Flv to Avi, Flv to Mpeg, Flv to Wmv.

cool, thanks, because ffmpeg is not working for me.

FreeMake is a pretty good free video conversion utility:

Free Video Converter - Convert Video Formats Free - MP4 MPEG AVI DVD HD FLV

Timely thread, I'm wanting to burn some downloaded Top Gear episodes to DVD.

One more vote for ffmpeg or mencoder

If you insist on a GUI, then VLC can do transcoding as well.

I'm working on a script to do just that as well... using ffmpeg and mencoder and dvdauthor

Interesting. I tried ffmpeg on a couple of different flv files. It always output a file that Windows media player only recognized the audio.

There's not much to the command line ffmpeg -i < input file.flv > < output file.[ desired extension ] >

I even tried adding the "-sameq" tag. For instance, it took a 180mb flv and created a 600+mb avi. When trying to play, all I got was audio. I used one of the gui driven programs suggested above, and out popped a useable file.

I suspect there may have been some more switches/parameters that I needed to feed it, but I don't know what those are.

The good news is that I did end up with a nice DVD to send to my cousin. I included that "Ascent - Commemorating Shuttle" movie that was posted here recently, plus a bunch of vids specifically of the launch/mission that We saw in May. I also included a couple of slideshows, one of NASA photos from the launch, time in orbit, and landing and a second slideshow of the photos that I took of the launch.

I burned an extra copy for myself. It's one of those things that I want to remember and be reminded of later.
