It's Adventure time! R1150GS...
Just bought my first GS and counting the minutes till she arrives. Sold the K-bike a few weeks ago and was going to enjoy spending the winter months shopping for a bike. After much research, I decided on a late model 1150GS over the 1200. I just like the more traditional GS look and yes, a touch more heft. This iteration just seems to harbor a certain character that is appealing (at least to my feeble sensibilities). The perfect bike came along on ADV and I jumped all over it. Has a heated Corbin seat, standard GS shocks and center stand (flat-footable), CeeBaily screen, PIAA's, etc, and only 21k on the clock.
Off road will probably account for 10% of its use. Looking forward to a more upright and comfortable riding position, room for a pillion and a place to put things that don't fit in my pockets. As such, this bike should see a lot more use than the mighty K did. It's on its way from Texas and should arrive first week of January. I feel like a kid (51 y.o.) waiting for Christmas. Tis the season, eh?

Nice! All kitted out, too. I have one of those (same version) on my list for when I depart AZ for colder climes. Many dirt roads where I'll be, and the Shovelhead probably won't cut it.

Chocaholic: Sweet bike, I had a 1150 GS a few years back and I miss it. You'll have a blast. I just happened to stop at our local BMW dealer today and Damn, that new 800GS is pretty cool too. I need to locate a bunch of $.

lookin good, the 1st gear is lower than the regular GS, and the 6th gear is also lower so it will pull better in top gear
I have a Staintune and Ohlins with S wheels. Check out boxerdesign.de

Great bike for you Mike. Had a great ride in CO this summer with my 1200. Does the bottom of yours look about like this?

there's a fix to strengthen the rear sub frame. and 1 in 1000 owners has had a drive shaft failure. don't remember if thiswas the model that introduced the servo assist brakes. but they were universally loathed.
otherwise, these are great bikes. have been looking to pick up one myself. the 1200s cross the line into just too complex territory. this is the one to have.

Yikes....hope to never know what she looks like from that angle. Seems there's a segment of the Adv group that takes pride in seeing the rubber side up. I'm not among them! Hope you came off of her unscathed!
Yes, the 04 had ABS and servo brakes with front and rear partially linked (front brake operates both, rear brake operates rear only). Can be switched off for off-road use. I've had servo brakes on an 02 KRS and that bike stopped as if the hand of God himself was in control. Stunning. Brake bleeding is a bit more complicated, but the system is reliable and the results from one-finger breaking are astounding. A potential life-saver IMO. I think servos get a bad rap due to complexity of fluid changes more than anything. No concerns here.

I ended up selling mine because in the end, I was afraid to use the bike for serious off-roading in Montana. I'm a decent sized guy and pretty much could not pick the bike up myself in most situations. There might be a trick to it.... I hear of some guys who can pick them up by putting their back towards the bike and lifting with their legs. But, they are an awesome machine for long distance... I've done 800 mile days on mine. Probably the best all round bike ever! And they look menacing!

The 1200 series has more power and less weight than the earlier ones. Still, they're not really made for the kind of offroading they show in their advertisements. And they are extremely expensive to fix when you bang them up offroad. They're pretty much made for touring and some fire roads. I can ride mine all day and not get tired. For serious offroading, I'd want an expendable dirt bike. I could have gotten one for less than it cost me to repair all the damage I did on that ride pictured above when I dropped her on the rocks (about 30 times that day).

Completely agree, Rick. That's why I went to a KLR650 a few years ago. For $5300 new, you can't go wrong. Feels like a 125MX bike compared to the GS.

This is my first offroad ride on my latest GS. Started out looking like it'd be no problem.
  But it got dicey after the point of no return and I ended up worrying so much about dropping it, that I didn't really enjoy the rest of the ride. This is the kind of stuff I want to do when I get a beater dirt bike.
