Don't confuse lil' Sidney with logic, folks...he wants a Macbook so he can be cool like the guy in the TV ads...

Sidney, you can find a place that does "3 easy payments" kind of stuff, but I suppose you still have a CC to do that.

Sometimes when I buy something spendy but I don't want the big hit on my CC I like to do that.

These places
Electric Guitars, Acoustic Guitars, Guitar Amps - American Musical Supply - Musical Instruments and Musical Equipment
Welcome to Sweetwater.com | Call Us @ 800 222 4700

Do it, I know Sweetwater used to do it for Macs but not sure if they still do.

Then you could pay like $400 a month for 3 months, with no credit check, no new card, etc.

Any thought to buying a used Macbook? You should be able to find one that'll do everything you need for $600. Check craigslist.

I am going to take a different tack. There is nothing wrong with buying on credit as long as discipline is applied. Credit is like alcohol, tobacco, or any other addictive substance. Some can manage it, most do not.

So, here are the terms of the CC:

If balances are not paid in full by the end of the applicable period, or if a late payment is made, interest will be charged from the purchase date at a 22.99% variable APR. See Terms and Conditions for details.

I don't know Syd's income or ability to repay to meet the 0% teaser, but if he can and applies discipline to the credit card addiction, he needs to make a few value trades:

- Want: New, refurb'ed or wait
- Need: Is the new capability really required?
- Urgency of the need: If his old whip fails while he waits, there is a cost associated.
- What will Island think of him if he buys a Mac;)

I keep two credit cards in my wallet, a gas card and an emergency credit/debit card.

Now, where are my scotch and cigs...

Not to hijack, but Sweetwater is pretty cool. They're located in my hometown. Chuck Surack is the president of the place...he's also pretty active in the Porsche activities there. (several 911's, a Carrera GT, etc).

$600 is more than enough to buy a decent new laptop. You can buy decent ones for under $400, sometimes even less. New, with warranty, the latest versions of the software, and more capability of your 3 year old Dell. Buy the Mac-daddy after you are making real money.

Here is an idea: buy a laptop with an intel dual core processor, and make a hackintosh out of it. Here is a list of models that will work:

HCL 10.5.2/Portables - OSx86

Don't buy the MacBook, but do get a credit card and start making most of your purchases on it and pay it in full every month. That is how you build credit

I keep hoping one of you will grow up, but I'm continually disappointed.

I feel the same way, but it appears that Sydney shows the most promise.

Best,

A MacBook will easily give 3+ years of use. As long as one can pay off the bills, I see no problem with CCs. As Paul said, like anything else in life, they can be used responsibly or abused. With the 0% offers the CC companies are betting that you won't pay it off. If you do, then you actually do get something for nothing.

Sounds like a stupid idea to me.... That said, it is you and your parents money you will piss away to the credit card company.... knock yourself out. Maybe you might even get a bail out some day from capt 0. ;)

I know I can pay this back in under 6 mos. I bought many more dollars worth of car parts last year off the same source of income that will pay for the laptop.

A desktop is out of the question, I am on the go all the time. I have been looking at used laptops, but most that I find are beat up, need work, or I get a hinky feeling. I use a laptop far too much to be dealing with something that might die at any moment. I have done the hackintosh thing on a netbook, thats too buggy to be my DD computer.

Mind sharing the scotch?

Wow Tim! Who pissed in your cereal?

Best,
Tom

Edit: Never mind. I just noticed the smiley.

?

So if you are currently using Windows (Dell) why not buy a new laptop for $600??
I'm genuinely interested, not judging. I just don't get why you'd need to pay more for a Macbook??
Enlighten me

iLand should have checked in by now! I hope he's OK.

Shhhh. Don't poke the beast.

On topic: I don't have any issue with throwing a few shekels to the money lenders on occasion. I thankfully don't have to now but there were times when it was a necessary & the only solution. Wise management of a cc & acknowledgement of their danger is the key.

If video editing is a hobby I'd vote no.

If it's something you want to get into that you can generate additional income from then OK.

If Sid wants to use Final Cut then Apple is his only choice. Premiere is a great product and cross platform but I prefer FC.

$600 laptop is not going to get you Firewire which for video editing on mobile machines is almost mandatory.

porsche4life 12-26-2010 04:33 PM

The video thing is just a hobby. I've played around some with my room mates mac when we were living together. I really miss having that computer around.
