Who else went into work today on a day off to get away from their inlaws?
My mother in law is like an annoying TV channel that you can't shut off with the volume set to max...
My father in law keeps asking rhetorical questions just to hear himself talk. I have another week of this... Maybe I'll go to the field and make some $$$. |
I will be feeling your pain week after next. I have to go to Texarkana to the in-laws for a week. My wife went out there a couple of weeks ago with the baby and had a horrible time on the airplane. This time there is no escape.

One of the many benefits of a divorce. ;)
The "rhetorical questions" thing would annoy me the most. But some people feel they have to "entertain" their guests so maybe he's trying to be polite. Trust me... Nothing can be done about your mother in laws volume level. (I've been there) |
I have to get up at 3 am to get my mom to the airport. Then we have unexpected houseguests, the daughter of a friend, her toddler, and her boyfriend, stranded in PDX because the flights to the East Coast are cancelled by weather. Jeez, we just got done with almost 3 weeks of houseguests. I am definitely going to work tomorrow. In fact, I expect to be sitting at my desk around 4:30 am, waiting for the coffee shop to open. Sigh.

At least YOUR mother-in-law doesn't come up with 3 new reasons for you to move next door to them in Kentucky...every time she visits.
It got to the point where my father-in-law finally told her to shut up (God bless him). |
I'm visiting my in-laws for a week, working construction with my father in law to keep busy. Fortunately I like them better than my real parents, so I'm good.
Billy, I'd suggest you start drinking heavily. |

I'll never have to go to Leigh, Nebraska again and sit around fort three days watching Orville, Doris, Jake, Betty and Great Grandma eat something called "sea foam salad" while wearing their polyester leisure suits. Don't even get me started on ex-FIL. That guy is a piece of work. |
I am very fortunate. My MIL is a wonderful woman. She seems to treat me better than her daughter sometimes.
|
I get along with my inlaws better than my own parents.
|
Maybe some of you understand my frustration that my MIL lives with us. When I said "I Do" 27 years ago, I didn't know this was going to be part of the bargain.

My wife would throw out my MIL before I did. I love my MIL, but I don't want to live with her, or her with us.
|
Inlaws? Hell, I love them. We just drove/flew/drove 14 hours to evac from _my_ family yesterday. While we love to visit the extended family on my side, spending four days with my parents reminds me why I moved 1500 miles away at 17. Ugh, they can have it...
It'd break my parents' hearts if they found out, but I'm looking forward to visiting old friends and carefully selected family this spring while we stay at a local hotel. Don't need the negativity, depression and drama. Just want to visit family and friends. And enjoy ourselves. |

Don't try and kid us that you would have had a different answer even if you knew it was a package deal at the time the question was asked. You do have a tough situation though, I will grant you that. I did very well with in-laws, both the first and the second time. I swear my ex-wife's dad still likes me better than her. I could take my wife's parents living with us better than she would, without a doubt. |
My wife hasn't seen or spoken to her mother, my mother in law, for over 30 years. Her Dad died before I met her. My daughter has never seen a picture of that grandmother. I don't see that changing. Doesn't bother me one bit. If the MIL showed up at the door I would tell her to leave. Works pretty well. Just lucky I guess.
|
In-laws? Nope. I won't associate with them at all anymore, much less invite them over. They can live their lives and I can live mine. If my wife wants to go visit, I say fine - I'll put gas in the car for you, just call me when you get there so I know you arrived safe and call me when you leave.
I'm not going to bother wasting my time on people who do nothing but annoy me. No thanks. |
In Laws
Had a great relationship with mine.
Wished we could be together for the holidays again. One died in 2001.....the other in 2008 What's the saying from the 70's hit ........."ya don't know what ya got till its gone" You may very well feel this way now but in the future you may not. Feel the same about my Dad.....he died in 2006 ENJOY the time......it goes by TOO fast!!!!!!!! |
Okay. Latest houseguests are at the airport, having gotten an alternate flight home. Two early-AM airport runs in a row is enough. They were nice - the toddler was a good boy, the boy-friend was a nice young man. He is in a part of the Navy that I thought no longer existed. He is a "riverine".

My mom has severe rheumatoid arthritis and can't carry her bags, so a shuttle doesn't work for her.
The folks this AM - they are young, a Navy E-5 and an ex-Navy-now-student on GI Bill, with a little son - I didn't want to stick them with another expense. Anyway, I get up at 4:30 AM for work normally, so getting up at 3:00 AM and going to the airport - while not something I want to do, I'll live. |
