Winter on the farm (pix)....esp. for Vash

Not my idea of paradise...snow, ice, frost...but better here than in the burbs...

Apple, pear, cherry orchard on the left...and the future vineyard in the distance...

Human tracks...deer tracks

The kids have been enjoying the new place..

Yep, Chicago area 'bout 50 miles west. Close enough to the crowded city and burbs, but far enough to not have to deal disrespectful neighbors.

Souk, after you are there a year or two, I predict you will realize you are indeed in paradise.

Tim: The joke between the wife and myself is, "we'll have the place all sorted in about 30 years when we are actually retired." The wife has a list...until her list is all checked off paradise will elude me

That might work, Tim, but I am a control freak over what gets mod'ed or added to the house (quality of material and work). If left to her, I'll be pissed for years over poor work and overpriced labor. The shop? It's become a dumping ground for all the stuff we had at the old house...fortunately she sympathizes and knows that organizing the shop is high on the list. I had given up on nearly all Porsche wrenching and engineering when she got pregnant with my first son. It's been 3 years so she knows I'm itching to finish some projects and hopefully she appreciates that I've been a dutiful husband and father...so it's reward time

That is a good plan. My shop is heated and has all the comforts of a man cave.

Beer fridge check
Compressor check
Microwave check
Welder check
bathroom check
Lift check
couch check
my toys check
Heated check
half a mile from the house check
Buddies know where it is check

Gretch - I think we may have identical 2-post lifts! Haven't moved it from the old mancave to the new mancave yet.

The plan is to have running water (separate well drilled) and a septic system installed near the shop for a guess house (my elderly parnets will be living there). So I'll have water and septic at the shop....

I like to work late into the night after the wife and kids have gone to bed, so a shower will be nice to have so I can clean up before I go up to the house. I've already got a fridge in there. Will probably build a "lounge" (aka my office) where the boys and I can hang out, drink and smoke cigars...

The posse christened the new mancave a few weeks ago with an all night poker turney. We stunk up the place good with the smell of beer, whiskey, cigarettes and cigars....hell, we even deep fried chicken wings a few times during the night to keep everyone happy The smell went away after a week of so....best thing...the wife couldn't complain about nothin' and we got as loud as we wanted to without worrying the neighbors will call the cops.

I added 10 minutes to the commute, total about 45-85 mins depending on traffic, mostly between 45-60 minutes. I don't mind the drive as most places take almost that long to get too with the density. The commute is long, but it's mostly highway so it goes just as quickly as if I worked 2-3 towns over.

As for when the zombies come, the posse knows where the retreat point is We'll be well defended.
