Is anyone a machinist?
I'd like to have made a solid steel or billet aluminum replica of the rear bumper shocks.
The purpose is a mounting point for a trailer hitch. The stock ones have too much flex and are filled with oil. |
That sounds like a really bad idea. What happens if you get rear ended and there is no trailer back there?
|
we pays our money and we takes our chances. euro ones are just a piece of tube with a flange welded on.
|
What's the diff? I have a FG bumper?
|
The euro tubes are crimped on one end, I suppose to allow them to begin crushing in some sort of predicatble way if the car gets hit. I doubt they'd be stout enough for a trailer.
I don't think you need a machinist. Any decent wedling/fab shop should be able to knock these out, from some round tubing and flat steel plate. |
I want to use solid round stock, drill and thread the inside. Slip the hitch over the ends, bolt it tight.....
|
Solid will transfer force in what may be very bad ways.
Round tubing sounds like a more practical solution to me. |
Your tub is going to be messed up, whether it's solid or hollow. That's why the euro tubes have crimped "crush zones."
My vote would be for some heavy steel tube. Solid would be ridiculously heavy. You just need a shop with a competent welder, and an example bumpershock to copy. |
Check this thread - what I did to tow my tire trailer to the track. . .

That's what I'm leaning towards.....who. how, etc, fabricated the replacement shocks tubes?
Tom, you have a PM. |
I'd make them out of hollow tubing and drill lots of holes in them, sort of like your steering column if you pull off your horn push. Solid until crushed, then collapses. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1293582941.jpg

I made those myself. Anyone with basic fabrication, welding skills and tools could replicate them (although I don't know if they'd be happy to assume liability!). I'll send you an email w/a little more info and my address if you'd like more photos etc... Tom |
Yes please......looks like I'll be sourcing material this weekend. The PM included my email addy.
