Don't send your wife to the Auto Parts Store

I'm sure you guys that have sent your wives to the parts store will appreciate this story.

28 Ounce Water Pump"

A woman calls an import parts warehouse and asks for a 28-ounce water pump.
"A what?" says the confused parts guy.
"My husband says he needs a 28-ounce water pump."
"A 28-ounce water pump? What kind of car does it fit?"
"A Datsun."
As the parts guy writes down "Datsun, 28 oz. water pump" the light in his head goes on. "Oh yes ma'am. We've got 28-ounce water pumps. We have 24-ounce and 26-ounce water pumps too."
"Finally," she says. "You're the first place I've called that knew what I was talking about."
"Yes ma'am. That's because we're a full-service parts warehouse; it's our job to have the parts you need, like a 28-ounce water pump," he says, smiling, as he jots down customer pick-up, Datsun 280Z water pump, part number…

That is a good parts man!

Cute story.

My wife is good at fetching parts but when in doubt she simply calls me and gives them the phone saying "here, YOU talk to him".

My ex GF asked me why my car had 24 oz on a script that ran under the doors once. I had to look at what she was talking about then it hit me. Funny.

I suspect I could convince my wife to move to Iran or Iraq before I could get her to go to the auto parts store for me.

Angela, you don't count!

You are 100% woman, but very atypical of the average wife.

The darned parts store where I live is "manned" by two cross-dressers....if I sent my wife after parts, she'd get the correct one and then get a chance to critique their dresses and makeup.

I would be like that but the guys at our stores don't know anything about cars. Husband told me that if I had more time in the day I should have tried for the Pelican telesales job.

Yep, the majority of part-counter people I deal with aren't car people and to them it's just a job. (Not a happy confluence of work and hobby.)

Over the summer I was changing the starter in a '93 Mercury Grand Marquis. The owner had bought the wrong starter.

We went to the local Advance Auto Parts and asked if there were any mid-year differences in '93. Parts counter guy told us "no" and asked where the Grand Marquis was made, we told him "Canada". He told us that Canadian starters were different and it had to do with the emissions systems differences. I thought that didn't make a whole lot of sense, but gave up for the day and went home. Upon 30 seconds of online research, I discovered that ALL Crown Vics and Grand Marquis are made in Canada and there were mid-year differences in the '93 starter!

We went back the next day, got a different guy, and had to special-order the correct starter. Apparently they were only put on the first few cars that year before repeated failure forced a redesign before the model year was over...then the design didn't change for the next 17 years. So we apparently had one of the good early starters that took 17 years to fail.

It's the male equivalent of....

....being sent out at 1 a.m. on a rainy night to purchase tampons. You get the instruction "I need the super absorbent unscented Playtex plastic applicator bio-degradable supers Pearls...you can't miss them they're in a blue box..."

You get to the feminine hygiene section and discover they're ALL IN FRIGGIN' BLUE BOXES.

Invariably you get the wrong ones....after the embarassing price check over the store loudspeaker while the hot 20 something babe is in line behind you.

Thankfully it appears I have forever more been fired from this job

Years ago I went to the lake to hang with some buddies. One of the guys was part of the family that owned the local marina store. They had a large campground and RV hookups area as well. The group of the guys were just chatting and telling stories.

In walks a guy looking very grumpy. It was obvious he had been in bed sleeping and was sent on a mission to buy tampons. He walked up to the register with a box of maxi pads and looked at the six of us and we could tell he was embarrassed. One of my buddies said "well your weekend is shot for sure" and we all laughed. I am sure the dude did not see the humor that we did.
