Suggestions for a couple of new/used cars...
Moving back to the US shortly from assignment in Shanghai.
Need to pick up a couple of rigs. One for wife to haul the family and the other for me for daily commuting. Budget $30-35k for both. Requirements Wife's rig: Seats 6+ AWD (our house is 1000 ft up a mountian that sees snow and ice) Reliable Lexus GX470, Volvo XC90? My rig: Sedan or wagon AWD preferred Decent MPG Reliable BMW E36 AWD, Volvo V70R, Subaru Wagon? Thoughts?

I'd stay away from the Volvo XC90, there are other 7+ passenger crossover utility vehicles for under $20K (Mazda CX9, Honda Pilot/Acura MDX, Toyota Highlander, '07-09 Cadillac SRX, Saturn Outlook/GMC Acadia/Chev Traverse/Buick Enclave, Subaru Tribeca, Hyundai VeraCruz, etc) It doesn't sound like you really need a truck-based sport utility like a GX470, fuel economy, ride, and refinement suffer.
The late model Legacy wagons are nice cars. But RWebb is right, the engines feel fairly unrefined but as a flat-six owner, it's a familiar sound, feel, and power delivery. For $15K you can also consider a Mercedes 4Matic, BMW iX, Audi Quattro, Volvo V AWD, etc. All cars can be reliable, and every car has its achille's heel. Tell us more about what attributes you're looking for. Help us narrow it down a little. |

If I'm not mistaken, the Subie wagons are available with an H6, and the Tribeca uses the H6. I rented one on a business trip in Wyoming a couple of years ago. A rather nice engine.

The XC90 T6 used a GM sourced transmission that did have some problems. If you get the smaller engine and not the T6 you don't get the bad tranny. My wife drives an 06 XC90 with the V8 in it, and it has a completely different transmission. Other than new rear wheel bearings that were replaced under warranty as a known problem, ours has been dead reliable. We bought it brand new, and have 50,000 miles on it.
