A well scripted movie. Lots of sound, little dialogue.

We had Vic Elford come in and spend a weekend with us at a Porsche Club weekend a couple years ago.

If you didn't know, he was the main driver of the camera car (a 917 with a camera on the hood). He was also driving a 917 in the actual race footage used.

I was MC'ing, and when it was his time to speak we killed the lights, fired up Le Mans queued to the race start (about 10 seconds before the engine start), and just let the first lap play, with the audio cranked in the hall.

The lights then came up, and Vic said, "would you like to hear me describe the first lap at Le Mans?".

It was beyond awesome.

Never watched the movie, though I always try to watch the real thing on TV or on the Net.

Maybe I'll watch it someday, but I prefer my movies with a great script, great acting & cinematography. (That also rules out me watching Avatar, but that's for another thread)

If you're a road racing guy, the cinematography's awesome.

Nothing like putting on the big screen and firing up the surround sound

Jeff - Vic is a great storyteller ... must have been incredible to hear him after that introduction !

Absolutely.

He says he doesn't like to give talks, so much as hold "Q&A Sessions". Basically, he gets up, and lets people just ask him questions.

He did that for almost 2 hours at our event, and it was incredible. Learned a LOT about his involvement with the development/creation of the RS America, racing the various 917's, (briefly) coaching Milka Duna, a bunch of interesting stories about the filming of Le Mans, and all of the other stories he's got tucked away.

We were lucky enough to have him join us for 3 days, and being the coordinator of the event, I was lucky enough to spend a fair bit of time with him.

I think he might even blame me for getting him back into golfing after a 20 year hiatus. He didn't really play that much in our round, but he drove the crap out of our golf cart.

We had an Autocross at our event as well, and he put on a driver training session for us, and was on-site for live coaching.

He was also kind enough to provide a few pieces of his memorabilia for a charity auction we ran.

But yeah, can't speak highly enough about Vic... he's a true gentleman, no doubt about it.

Jeff,

That was the BEST Porsche function that I have ever attended! Many thanks to you and your group for putting it on.

Best,
Tom

Thanks so much Tom... It was a blast to put on, for sure. Im glad you and so many others enjoyed it as much as we did.

And to think that all came about because I just sat down one afternoon to watch Le Mans.
