Sailors are supposed to be raunchy.

That is all.

I thought this too until it was revealed that it was the Navy officers who produced the videos... It's one thing for sailors to watch some good girl-on-girl porn, but it's something else entirely when the Navy itself (in the form of an officer) produces the videos for them to watch...

From what I have seen of the videos, they wouldn't get a PG-13 rating, much less something worse. I've seen worse on the Comedy Channel.

They call it "sailor talk" for a reason.

As has been pointed out, folks who run large warships powered by nuclear reactors and armed with tactical warheads should know better..

That been said, these so called "lewd" videos are being replayed endlessly on TV during morning shows and prime time TV.. What is unacceptable for adult sailors is just fine for kids while having their morning cornflakes..

I watched the video.

It was mildly amusing.

I get more offended/irritated by the constant onslaught of viagra/cialis ads, feminine hygene products, etc. that are on during any football game.

Much ado about nothing. As I alluded to in my other thread, this is really just about the Obama administration making an example out of someone to reaffirm their position that "hey, the military is now all about gays" in order to secure the gay vote in 2012.

Thanks for your opinion, but do you have any evidence that the Obama administration had anything to do with it at all? The story broke after someone on the ship told a Virginia newspaper about it. All the reports I've read are about what the Navy is doing about it.
The guy who produced the videos was the second in command of a half-billion dollar ship and he was acting like a frat boy. The only responsible thing to do is replace him with someone who is serious about his job and his career.

The story "broke" 3-4 years after it happened?!?! If the sailors were so incensed and offended, why didn't they report it earlier?

Surely they haven't been at sea that long...

My guess is that the person who reported it was gay and thought he would get thrown out of the Navy if he made any noise. If that's the case, then the repeal of don't ask don't tell has already improved our military by getting fratboy out of the driver's seat of that nuclear carrier.

The problem is, it's hard to command the respect of your subordinates if you are all jokey-jokey with them (or if they perceive that you are). It's okay to have fun, but when sailors start seeing you as just another "bud," than your not a good leader. The best officers in my command have been the ones that balance authority with courtesy...in other words an officer you aren't afraid to go to with a legitimate problem but one that isn't acting more like a roomate/drinking buddy than a Naval Officer.

I suspect there's something else going on here. Couldn't the "gay" person have reported it anonymously to someone 3-4 years earlier? From what I've read, everyone on board liked the videos.

I made 2 cruise's during my time. Kitty Hawk in 86 around the world, and a Nimitz west pac in88. When you cross the equator, there is a celebration to initiate the first timers, or wogs as they are referred to. The guys who have gone before,or shellbacks, put on the event and it lasts all day.
This video looks as though it may have been produced for an event like wog day.
If you could see the pictures I have it would make some that video look tame by comparison.
It never entered my mind to publish photos to try and disgrace people.
In my mind the real problem is the person who released this stuff to the media, and the politicians for insisting the Navy do some thing about it.
A non story, taken out of context. And for another generation of Sailors,a tradition lost.
Sad

Actually I read people had complained in the past about the videos, when the guy was only the XO. Now he is CO, and it finally caught up to him.

I was stationed on that ship from 92-96. Nothing like that went on when I was in. Of course the ship was in the yards most of time.

it was reported years ago - nothing was done

that appears to be a failure by one or more flag officers, so expect to see discipline there next

I have worked with and for some of the most 'professional' companies in the world and trust me PROFESSIONALISM is a myth. That is akin to Priests keeping their hands off alter boys and cleaning ladies. Ya! Right!

If you spent anytime with a 'professional' athlete or a 'professional' musician or a 'professional' upper management type you would quickly see that the image they portray to the public is much cleaner than they truly are. Now, imagine the ones that the public sees as real scalawags! Those are the real fun ones.

Did this really need to of public stuff? I mean really now. The media does not have anything better to report? This country is really turning into a bunch of pantie waists. For God Sake America NUT UP!
