590A1 or 870? Anyone with a 20" 590A1 spoon?

We just moved into a new home and at the same time, a bird decided that the side of our house makes a good nest. I discovered a hole on the north side of the house, and I plugged it temporarily. The next day...a new hole (about the size of a silver dollar). I temporarily plugged it. And then a few days later the kids tell me there is another hole!

So I plugged it, and the next morning, the wife says she hears something in the wall. I go out and unplug the last hole, and stand there waiting to see if it was a furry fucher or a pecker. Several minutes go by and out comes the little fucher..bird.

Had I been standing there with a shot spoon with bird shots, I'd been pretty satisfied witht he results.

.....so in addition to me just wanting another spoon, I figure a 18.5" or 20" 590A1 would be nice to have. Is the 1.5" between the two really that big of a deal to give up 2 more shots? I think the 20" 590A1 is .5 lbs heavier than a 18.5" 590A1.

I've heard some bad feedback on the Remmy 870 and don't think I'll like the location of the safety on the 870...

Any feedback from you shot spoon owners?

I shot the 870 my entire adolescence. I still shoot it. Great gun.

But I hear the recent QC at Remmy isn't great.

I don't think you can go too wrong with the 870 or the Mossberg 12ga pumps. I bought a folding stock/pistol grip and an 18" barrel for my Mossberg 500 and mounted a light on it. It sits beside my bed and has always gone bang in the middle of the night when the dog alerts us to a cat food stealing varmint. I am sure I have smoked at least 50 varmints over the years with it with no failures of any kind. It sits out collecting dust and never gets cleaned. I am confident an 870 will be just as useful/reliable of a tool.

20" would be better if you ever decide you want to try 3 gun competition shooting.

Have a 500 that I've put thousands of rounds thru w/ no issues. Same as the 590 except the longer mag tube on the 590...

The Mossberg won the military trials... the remington didn't

It's a Ford vs. Chevy argument. They are pretty comparable in all meaningful ways.

pellet gun for woodpeckers. shooting a shotgun at the house cannot be healthy to your home.

the old people in a local neighborhood ROSSMORE has been buying up .177 pellets for years. they never even get busted...

I just bought this model. I did have a 870 express for several years. I will say that they need to have 100 shells of bird shot ran down the bore to smooth out the action bars.

When I sold my 870 express it might have had 500 rounds of mixed shells cycled out.

The action was so smooth that you could cycle it with only a a few fingers on the fore grip.

The 870P that I bought has a much nicer finish to it there's no sharp edges on the mag well or the ejection port. My express model had a few rough edges.

My police model is pretty tight right now and reguires a firm grip on the fore grip I can't wait to hand it to my 4 ons and have them dump plenty of rouds down range to smooth it's action for me!

I have shot the 870 and liked it but bought a Mossberg 500 that already had the pistol grip and slidding stock. 18" and I like it as well. But like someone else said, a pellet rifle for birds around the house would be great. I had a pellet rifle with a scope in Costa Rica for lizards, big like Iguanas, head shots would drop them off the roof.

I did all the research on this about 4 years ago, and ended up with a Benelli Nova. Very happy with it. I thought the modern 870 was a cheap POS compared to its competitors.

Certainly didn't want to add more holes to the side of the house, but would have a "pull!" as the little pecker flew out of the hole in the wall, then BOOM! as it ascended over the orchard Remember, I live in the sticks now.

I don't think I want to spend Benelli money, I just want a simple pump action. No pistol grip, ghost ring...18.5 or 20". Probably gonna go with the 20".

I stopped by the Dick's Sporting Goods on my lunch break, and they didn't have any 590's, but they had a 500 and a Remmy 870 Express Tactical.

The 500 action was rather loose and rattlely. Is that normal for a 500 or 590? Obviously I don't know much about shot spoons.

The 870 action was more solid compared to the 500.

i have :

(1) rem 870 full riot built by hans vang. insane accurate w/federal slugs. vang comped ported w/ spec ops folding stock. streamlight mega light on remote switch. and the 28" barrel with every choke.

(1) mossberg handy dandy 18.5 and 28" barrel with extended mag tube for 18.5 and alum mag tube follower

(1) hk/benelli super 90 12 gauge 21" VR barrel and all the goodies. vang comped, tom knapp fire sights on it. ultimate thick dezert brush quail and dove snotgun.

(1) benelli m-2 18.5 full riot pistol gripped, streamlight mega light on remote

(1) h&r .410 that has been hammered by both kids and the big kid(me) for years and never whimpered with a choate pistol grip stock.

next on the bucket list will be a benelli SUPER BLACK EAGLE 32" barrel for reach out and touch quail/dove w/a full choke installed. have shot my amigos and it is mucho effective.

remingtons and mossys ARE CLUBS in comparison to benelli's.

have shot the poo out of all of them and at the end of the day of bustin brush and playing with rattlesnakes.................i have a shoulder intact when using the benelli's.

i only use federal LE rounds in OO buck or slugs in mossy or rem. but then WTF do i know? go ahead and shoot those 3" magnum rounds out of a mossy or a rem and send us some pictures of your shoulder and cheek!

which is better the mossy or the rem? it all comes down to how well it fits and familiarity with the controls.

last time we went quail hunting i shot (6) boxes of 25 each #6 and #7's thru the benelli. try that with a rem or a mossy and please send pictures.

all actions are stiff at birth. 200 rds of ammo thru it and its broken in.

while yer bored to death after ya make the purchase of whatever model, sit at home watching cartoons, and rack the action(obviously with mag tube empty) about 62,000 times and wipe the action bars down with CLP. it will get so easy you'll poo yerself. yes SIXTY TWO THOUSAND TIMES!

trust me...................it works the same with lever actions.

buy federal LE OO buck and slugs and yer castle/campsite will be very very SAFE!

now thru my combat wombat experience, i would buy the mossy 590 w/bayonet lug. why? because the M-9 LAN-CAY USGI issue BAYONET fits on it!

and there is nothing more intimidating than oneself standing in yer yard with a snotgun w/a bayonet! great for crowd control!

I have an 870 police model and a Winchester Defender. The Defender is obviously the cheaper of the two, but both get the job done.

I have a plain 870 18". Hundreds of rounds through it. No complaints. Works smooth and goes bang when it is supposed to.

Love my mossy... You can pick up a bare bones 500 at wallymart for 187.... Hard to ignore that for a cheap scatter gun.

590A1 has a metal trigger guard & safety. I think the barrel may be heavier also.
But then this is hundred year old technology, can't really improve things much.

Yep, the 590A1 has a heavy barrel, metal trigger guard and safety. It's maybe $20 more than the regular 590, so it's a no brainer to get the metal trigger guard and safety. Iffy on the barrel, but what the heck....if I need to beat in the head of a zombie...it'll be better

Just gonna have to go find a store that has both and see which ones my hands like better. I was hoping someone would say "hell yeah..go 590A1, the 870's are crap nowadays" so the decision would be easy

The Novas are not super expensive like other Benelli. $400ish.
