The French Laundry
I have made a commitment to join a friend on a trip to The French Laundry in March.
How can I get in and out of Yountville, with a +1, without losing my shirt?

You lost me with 'French Laundry'...
May very well be the most expensive place in the entire valley, you know that right? Gonna be an expensive day. KT

The French Laundry - One of the 10 best French restaurants in the world located outside of France. Bring a roll of Tums and at least $300. Nine course meal of Meat/Fish or Vegetables.

It's a culinary holy grail. Multi-hour dinner, relax and enjoy - unforgettable. If you are there late you can usually ask and get a tour of the Kitchen after service is complete. They are serious about you needing a jacket, but tie is not necessary. Agreed about Bouchon (started by Jeff Ciricello working for Keller, was designed as the bistro the chef's would go to after cooking at the Laundry) with respect to a great meal, but it is a different experience.
I gather your friend already has the reservation? That's the most difficult part. There are a bunch of blogs where people have written up the dinner, since there are some core elements that don't change, it's a nice preview. Also, if you are hanging around Yountville in the afternoon, the garden is across the street, sometimes you'll see Thomas picking vegetables...

Budget around $250 per person.
Yes, it's worth it for the experience once. Not sure I'd do it again, mostly because I'd rather try other new and great places, but no regrets at all. +1 on verifying reservations. They have a well deserved rep as one of the finest restaurants in the world and it's always fully booked. |

Don't go if you can't affrod it, otherwise enjoy it and pay the piper later. The chance might not come again. I have done many expensive things once and really enjoyed most. But I'm not going to pay a high price and do a second time.

Thanks for the tips. $300 doesn't seem bad. If I had a bucket list, The French Laundry would probably be on it.
We have two friends that each claim that only they, and not the other, can get a table. So we threw down the gauntlet, and hopefully one of them can come through for us. Any tips for places to stay?

Expensive meals make no sense to me. For $300, I could feed 20 or more people a really nice meal. KT

French Laundry is not on my list. Just had dinner at Celadon in downtown Napa tonight. That's about as much as I want to pay for fine dining. Though I do plan to take wifey to Gary Danko's in SF for our anniversary.
