DVI VGA HDMI - I dont get it

I want to hook up an external monitor to my Mac book pro which has the mini DVI port. There are adapters for Mini DVI to VGA and HDMI and I think some others as well. Does it matter? My monitor has 3 input ports, 2 VGA type and one DVI type. Would there be any difference between the two?

If you already have the DVI mini port I would go with DVI... Really not much difference in signal quality. I think it is more about lots of compatibility....

I went with a VGA mini port since two TVs I hook to have that.....

I'd use DVI, because you will stay in a digital format, and the computer will recognize the TV as a 'monitor' that way and auto-select a resolution for you. (At least it does for HDMI.)

Be careful ; there's "Mini-DVI" and also "MiniDisplayPort" on MacBook pros, and they are NOT the same. Make sure you know which one you have.

Older ones had "Mini-DVI", which is a little bit bigger. They were kind enough to include an adapter with your $1xxx purchase, though.

Mini display port is the newest variant.

1st gen did not support audio via HDMI but subsequent did.

It's VESA standard.

Apple has licensed it out and its starting to show up in other manufacturers boxes

I have a brand new MacBook Pro that has Mini Display Port, and does not support audio. Could be the adapter. . . .

Early 2010 or late 2010?

Did you get directly from Apple?

Bought in October. It's a dual-core 2.4

That should be the newer standard. It was issued Q2 2010.

Did you buy at apple store or apple online?

Sometimes the big boxes and places like CDW have older stock.

Happened to me before.

Or could be the adaptor.
