Docs and settings is not used anymore.
You want to be in: C:\Users\_username_\My Documents...

thx - that was fast
BTW - won't my old Excel from Office 2000 look in Docs & Settings like it did on my XP machine? I note it is installed in a special folder for programs that are DDR "retarded" with an x86 tag on the folder name... |

No, it will look in the correct folder under Users.

wait a sec....
C:\Users\_username_\My Documents... is where I have all my data files - the ones I work on all the time I don't want it cluttered up with a bunch of files that customize my Appl. pgms. **** there is another subdi of the exact same name & path that is locked out... The directory structure was changed in Vista (7 follows the Vista paths). Ignore the C:\Documents and Settings. It's not longer used.
C:\Users\_username_\My Documents is like the XP C:\Documents and Settings\_username_\My Documents... You can still drag and drop the files.

The open one. I honestly don;t know why the shortcut is there and locked. I just ignore it and move on. Not something I care to get caught up with.

If you got a Mac it'd work better.
Because on a Mac, you wouldn't be able to dig out decade+ old Office software and expect it to work. You'd be trained to just buy a new expensive bit of hardware and all new software to go with it every so often because they'd break backwards compatibility... It's not a fair comparison. People ***** that Microsoft isn't cutting edge, or never changes anything, and then in the next breath ***** that Microsoft did something little like moved a folder. Can't have it both ways. If you're going to keep it, I'd suggest learning how libraries and the new start menu work, vs. trying to force it to work the old way. Using the new shortcuts, jumplists, search methods, etc. does work better. After a few minutes of adding some favorites to Explorer, etc., I can navigate and find stuff far faster than possible in XP. Office 2000 isn't doing you any compatibility favors either, the new Home and Business verison of 2010 is $170 at Costco, and Home & Student is only $120 if you don't use Outlook.

Yeah, sorta, it was only half sarcastic though.
You really can't dig out your Mac copy of Office 2001 and expect it to work on a new OSX Intel machine, it just won't. (Screwing around with virtualization doesn't count)

in a prev. thread the hassle of learning a new interface seemed heavily outwieghed by the new bells & whistles in the 2010 Office versions
I might have to upgrade from 200 to 2003 versions tho. oh yeh - Word crashed a few minutes ago - I opened Tools Autocorrect to see why the damn dictionary was not working |

And I spent just as much time giving one of the local guys (who's in IT) a hard time about wanting to nurse along old copies of Windows and Office too.
I think equally on PCs and Macs that you should run whatever is reasonably current to the OS. I'd throw equal stones at someone trying to run Pagemaker on a new Macbook Air.

And you can hide the ribbon and use it like a menu if you really want to. And 99% of the keyboard shortcuts still work anyhow. It's worthwhile for not having compatibiliy issues, haven't to futz with the add on packs to read newer docs, being able to save to pdf and e-mail all with one button, etc. etc. And actually, if I was to be against upgrading, I'd probably then switch to OpenOffice just since it's at least currently developed and has updates, etc.

Todays Mac is a completely different animal. I would not expect an app written for a different operating system AND processor to function.
