Get a grip...............
 

Shown below are close up pictures of the custom, hand carved grips that came on a Colt Officers Model that I bought a few months ago. Not only are the grips comfortable when shooting, but they are mirror images left and right. The scene is that of a deer at the base of a large tree with a cougar up on a branch sizing up the deer for supper! The revolver is circa 1930 or so and you can see from the verdigris on the screw escutchions that they have been on the gun for many years. Just wish I knew who did the carving and when. Oh, yes, it's chambered for 38 special.

It might be pressed rather than carved. Either way, they are very nice looking and I like that revolver. Real old-school, matter-of-fact elegance.

Tabs had a set of S&W grips floating around and very kindly sent them to me. I went from

Have you taken them off? They may be signed on the back. Nice grips. Definitely hand carved.

I did remove the grips, unfortunately there were no markings of any kind on the inside. By the way, this revolver is quite accurate and the timing/lockup is flawless (not always so with an old Colt!).

Spoon in the bottom picture Grips are ahhhh NOT KRECT....they should have a nickle medallion and not Gold medallions...as the AU medallions are POSTWAR and U have a prewar OM

As I have them wt a 4 inch Barrel, 4.5 inch, 6 inch and 7 1/2 B. I have em in 22, 32 & 38. I have Colt OM King Super Targets in 22, 32 & 38.(just try and find a KST in 32 or even 22) I have SA only... I have a 1914, 1915 7.5 B, a 1916 6 B unfired.. I even have an Official Police 22 KST...which is dream to shoot.

I just shipped today a prewar Colt OM KST 38..in the past I have had a 5 inch Barrel, British Lend Lease 7.5 inch. a OM 32 wt 7.5 B..(super rare,) a 1904 6 B in mint condition..(1st yr prod) ..


The guy who bought my 32 7.5 B, 5 inch and 1904 OM 's has the best collection of prewar Colt DA's out there. He has every model Colt prewar DA in every barrel length, finsih and caliber..over 1000 Colt DA's.

I can't imagine having 1000 colt revolvers.

Guy uesed to display em at Tulsa, NRA Convention and Ohio Collectors Ass Shows. Even won best of show for his display. That is until he went to the Ohio Collectors Ass had his display where a friend of mine was the judge...my friend didn't even look at his display beofre they gave the best display to someone else. who had 6 rifles That pissed him off so he doesn't display anymore.

My friend explained it to me that the displays were to be judged on Single Shot TGT rifles...

This last weekend I met a guy who bought a English 1000 yd percussion TGT by Wm Edge of London circa 1870's for 17K from Lewis Drake. Nice rifle..guy collects English Doubles and wanted a 1000 yarder to shoot at Friendship.

Colt Revolvers.........
 

Prewar Colt revolvers are, quite simply, incredible. In over 35 years of buying, selling and collecting firearms I have never found any other maker that has built such generally fine products. Also, I have never seen a prewar Colt lose value. In fact, there is an old saying that goes something like: "If you want to make money collecting, buy Colt pistols (sic) or Ford automobiles. There's a lot of truth in those words! One revolver that I don't have (yet) is a Colt Target Master or Shooting Master in .44 special or .45 Long Colt. Think Officers Model Target built on a New Service size frame and you get the idea! I had the chance to pick up King Sight Shooting Master in .357 mag but really wanted one of the big bore models.

Those are nice. Where can I find a set for a model 36 S&W round butt?

Jim,

The Smith and Wesson grips look like they might be Herretts (no screw in the sides). Herretts should be able to make what ever you want. Their grips usually start somewhere around $80 - $100 per set.

If I had to get shot I'd want it to be with a gun like that - beautiful!

Much nicer and elegant than the run-of-the-mill plastic pieces of junk everyone seems to ooh and ahh over these days...

(disclosure: I also own a couple of them plastic guns so they're not ALL bad... Just a bit boring)

Even just a few years ago grips were a dime a dozen. Now they are getting expensive and in some cases hard to find.

Hi JD, they fit my hand way better, and the gun is a shooter so I want it to be the right fit other than being correct. And if I want it to be correct the old grips are kept in perfect order in the attic, umm, somewhere in the attic. The more I look at those grips the more I want to say they could be an old set of Ropers.

Don't bet on it...

You passed on a Colt Shooting Master 357 wt King Sights...first was it just the sights or was it the KST conversion. Either way you made a BIG MISTAKE which amounts to pushing yourself down the stairs in the annals of bright things to do.

The 44spl and 45 LC in CSM is gona cost ya...NORTH OF $3500 EACH..way North..The 45 ACP in CSM is the tough one..and is going to cost a corresponding amount of dinero.

Contrary to popular belief Colt OM's and DA's in general have moved up in value VERY SLOWLY at a virtual snails pace. While the actions, fit and finish is extraordinary there just doesn't seem to be much demand. The exception on the Colt DA front are the Big New Service Frames especially the NS TGTs and SM's.

If you want to invest money into Colts than the ones to buy are as follows

1. Colt Percussion era, blk pwd cap & ball. In October of 2008 a Colt Walker sold for $920,000.00..need I say more

2. Colt SA Armys, the cowboy/cavalry revolver that won the west.. pre wars bring the most followed by those made before 1976 as 2ND generations. Colt SA #1 hs sold for around half a million...US Cav guns in nearly new condition can bring 80 to 100K.

3. Colt Autos especially the 1911 and variants...A Singer WW2 contract piece brought 80K, with many other variations bringing 5k to 10K easily. There are many models and variations of those autos that can sell for bank.
