Funny article in the latest "Mensjournal" about a quest for a 912.

Found the article in the latest Mensjournal when waiting for my son to get a haircut. Did some searches on the article but nothing available except a brief description and this video:

Obsession, Thy Name is Porsche Video*|*Men’s Journal

The author mentions Pelicanparts in his search for this car. Wonder if anyone remembers him on this board of the older 911 boards. Check it out if you can.

That's my neighbor Eric. I tried to talk him into getting a 911, but he was truly obsessed with finding a 912. I have to say it is the nicest 912e that I've ever seen. A very nice car.

I figured someone would know him with the amount of Porsche obsession that lives on this board. Any way you can get the article online? It is a good read. What was the obsession with a 912? From the article, it seemed the uniqueness and rarity over any other attributes (are the any?) of a 912.

I live near Jim & Erik too.
Erik surfs and does short hop drives, being close to the beach. The 912e engine is far better suited to this. I have driven this car and it is a real sweetheart...super smooth and just plain fun.

He said that he primarily intends to drive to the beach where he usually surfs. It's a 5 minute drive, and he didn't want to have a 911 that never got the oil up to temperature during the short trip.

edit: Dan beat me to it. Dan, any new plans for your car?

That's good Dan, hopefully on the road for summer.

I sent Eric an email about this thread, if he's around he'll probably jump in soon.

Hey, guys -- thanks for bringing up and liking my nutty Porsche story. Before deciding on a 912E, I spent many hours here on Pelican but mostly on Rennlist making a pain in the ass of myself as I looked at 911s. It was great fun and everyone was as kind to me as they could be, ha ha.

89911: For my main gig, I'm a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, but RS also owns Men's Journal, so I write for that magazine sometimes, too. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the piece; you never know what people will think. Did you know that the fellow toward the end, the one who does a real number on me, is a frequent Pelican poster, as well? Yup, he's here somewhere!

Sadly, my E is now in the garage, hooked up to a battery tender and surrounded by mothballs to ward off the mice. Winter's in full force, and I can only dream of driving it, which I do, frequently....

The piece isn't online at the moment. The magazine wants you to buy the magazine. But once it's off the newsstands, I'll put it up on my little blog, It Takes All Kinds .

The story of the disguising yourself as a proxy buyer was funny. You know I am a typical Porsche geek when I spotted a error in your article though. The last of the aircooled cars was 1989 and not 1987. Owning an 89, this was easy for me.

I thought the last year of the aircoolers was 1998?

Floete, I'm glad you found a car. We gave you a hard time on RL but it was all in fun.

Enjoy the 912.

Sorry, he said something along the lines of the traditional 911 and not aircooled. I need the article again.

I think he meant to say "the last year of torsion-bar cars."

Speaking of odd obsessions:

Went to the German autofest with (at that time) girlfriend, I was drooling all over a 1972 911T... see said "why would you want such an old car?"

I sat in a new Boxster they had on display "oooo why don't you just buy one of these?"

PS, I did like the Boxster.

Hey, bring that 912 down here to Arizona and do what we do... take the top down all winter long!
