Exclamation Doggie Docs - the Schnoodle ate a gardening glove!

Our vets are now closed for the weekend... before I really panic and call the emergency number I am seeking advice.

Layla (Schnoodle) is a PITA...adorable, but still a PITA! We all know not to leave anything around she can literally sink her teeth into and chomp on; but we've had some extra kids staying over the holidays and they aren't used to Layla's seek, destroy and eat methods. 12yo boys are not good at picking stuff up, finding the garbage bin etc...

So, she managed to grab a gardening glove and eat it. Just about all of it. Apparently a couple of days ago; I now find this out from the kids

Pic of remaining intact glove with what's left of the other one alongside.

Layla has been eating grass today and so far has delivered this lot 'up' in 4 goes:

She's been drinking and last night she scoffed her dinner down as per normal. But her nose is warm and dry and even though she seems her usual self I am worried. There must be a whole lot more glove in that tummy of hers as I can't find bits of it anywhere else.

That white thing is a wrapper of some sort. In the last two days she has also managed to grab a bag of chocolates and we caught her chewing her way through a wrapper. Boys left the bag on the couch; where Layla could easily reach...I could throttle them!

If you see a finger tip coming out the other end, give a gentle tug?

I hope she will be alright. Looks like three tips are MIA. Yikes. Hopefully she'll keep eating grass and barfing stuff up.

Not just the tips I am worried about - where's the rest of the bloody glove???

I really think she ate it - ALL; except for the bit that I went digging through the garbage to find when the kids told me today...how the hell could she eat it all?

it looks like most of it has come out & that it was bitten into small pieces, thus there may not be any blockage of the GI tract

if the dog continues to act normally, poop normally, and if you can feel nothing odd when you palpate her, then after 2 days, I'd guess there is no big concern - I'm not a vet. nor a clinician of any sort, so err on the side of caution.

find the emergency 24 hr. vet. in your area, and practice driving there a few times as a basic measure

I'm not a vet, but I have a lot of experience with a dog that'll eat anything. Seeing as theres not metal on the glove, I'd just keep an eye on her to make sure she keeps eating and having normal bowel movements.

Biggest bits are about 2cm...but there is a whole lot of glove still missing. I am hoping she's chewed it up into small pieces and it comes out - poop or chuck; I don't care which!

Scoured the lawn earlier for glove laden poop - none. Probably too early for that I guess...

Oh this dog is a terror!

Just keep an eye on the general condition of the dog. If it starts to obviously feel bad, does't crap or eat or tries to throw up repeatedly without producing anything go see the vet. My bet is that it will pass no problem. I have seen a dog poop out an entire dish rag in one piece.

Last winter was sooooo cold that Layla needed a coat...best pics are on the kids' computers I think...must find a better one as she really is cute...

She also eats socks, undies, balls, paper etc etc...I guess I shouldn't be so worried really.

LOL - nice eyeliner!

Some dogs are nuts and can't be trusted. I would recommend a kennel for the time she isn't directly supervised. A crate in the house and a run in the yard will fix it. Of course this assumes you spend a few hours a day with the dog so it isn't locked up 24/7. I also find wearing them out real good (long walks, bike rides or roading them off a motor vehicle) makes them much less interested in chewing up stuff ....

Silly thing is that she gets a lot of attention. Lulu the cat gets chased and romped with frequently (she's a very tolerant and obliging cat). The kids romp with the dog a lot; she gets walked often and comes home exhausted (little legs - much more steps to cover than us). She plays and plays...has soccer balls in the garden and tosses those around constantly. Plays chasey around the loungeroom every night with at least one of the kids (including we big kids).

She also has a kennel...a really nice little kennel. At least the cat thinks so! Now if you were Layla Schnoodle why on earth would you want to sleep in a kennel when 13yo Charlotte will happily carry you off to bed every night with her!

She's just plain spoiled - the kids just wouldn't listen when she was a puppy and they spoiled her rotten. Too many chiefs, not enough indians around here! My bad...I was outnumbered!

But I love her...we all do...even when she eats the underwear!!! Well maybe not the last time she chewed a Perele bra...I didn't love her all that much then

Hehe...last year I actually had to write a note to Charlotte's humanities teacher. "Please offer Charlotte an extension on her current assignment as the dog ate it. Seriously - this is not a joke, nor a poor excuse. I have the evidence should you wish to see it".

Charlotte left her work on her bed; Layla hopped up there for a snooze, decided a nice paper snack would go down well instead...

I shamefully admit to snacking on paper when I was younger..

It's been said above in this post, and it's the right thing to do. All will be eventually OK if she does not keep vomiting, unless she's bringing up parts of foreign material. If she's still eating and pooping just let it ride. It's when they start getting lethargic, vomit fluid and don't want to eat that you need to jump on it. She looks perky and alert in the pics.

Just a note, I don't know when you checked her nose, but when they sleep, their noses change to warm and dry. It's when they are awake and active that they are cold and wet.

I agree with the others, monitor her eating, pooping and general demeanor. As long as all seems normal, she'll probably be fine.

A friend just went through this with a medium Schnauzer. It ate a sock. Sock stayed in there a while, then got 'stuck' resulting in vomiting. Had to be surgically removed. Took the hound a few days to recover.

So if your dog honks up its breakfast, take it to the vet- straight away.

the same things you are 'thinking' when you eat sushi - it is all about "mouth feel" and dogs have much higher #'s of sensory receptors for that, esp. in the teeth, tongue and gums and ESP. in retrievers - that is a concomitant of the hundreds of generations of artificial selection humans did on all retr. breeds to get them to mouth ducks well for ... retrieving

they are connoisseurs of mouth feel

mine likes to clamp her mouth around people's forearms and just mouth it - I call it "warm sushi"

find some Bitter Apple and hose down every surface you do not want the dog to chew - if a puppy, then do not neglect electrical and phone cords, chair legs, etc.
