Great post!

Wow... What a car! I love detail work like this. :D

I love the little clock on the dash, nice touch. How much does that service cost?

Lot$... I'm guessing around $7,000 USD but that's just cleaning, changing filters and fluids. Assuming nothing needs replacing.
I hope someone chimes in who actually knows for sure.

Meanwhile... That video is something else again. You get a really good look at the empty engine bay.

In picture #9, I notice he is using what looks like a Harbor Freight caliper.

Best,
Tom

Except it says 'Blue-Point'. Which is Snap-On.

stealthn 01-25-2011 04:39 AM

Cracked coil packs after that little mileage, what a piece of junk :D

He mentioned in a follow-up post that he paid 10K GBP...about $16K US. That included some extras like the paint shield and detailing. A few things, like replacing a camshaft, were covered free of charge under a "goodwill" program.
Quite a few high rollers over there on Rennlist. Some talking about having THEIR CGTs serviced...another saying how he never should've sold his.
One guy's sig listed the following:
2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cab
2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder
2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo
2010 Porsche 997.2 GT3 RS
2005 Porsche Carrera GT #1012
2008 Porsche TPC/Techart Cayman S Turbo
2006 Porsche Cayman S (track car)
2011 Lamborghini LP 570-4 Superleggera
2011 Ferrari 458 Italia
2008 Ferrari 430 Scuderia
2011 Corvette ZR1
2006 Spyker C8 Spyder

That sig line sort of says it all. The guy I know with a CGT would probably not even know what it costs after he paid for it. My buddy's fiance' just got a new SL63 Benz. I asked him how much she paid and he said that he didn't know, (never asked and doesn't care), and that he was pretty sure that she didn't know either. She just tells her business manager which one she wants when it's new car time. She traded an SL600 when the lease expired.

Don't get me wrong, I feel more at home with the working stiffs over here but there's a whole 'nother world out there in terms of disposable income.

This is an interesting comparison! Here is pic #9 with the Snap-On caliper:

And here are two pics of my Centech (Harbor Freight) caliper:

Maybe I got a bargain! :) Of course who knows if the quality is comparable. I think I really just wanted to post in a CGT thread.

Best,
Tom

I have two of those HF calipers. They're so cheap, I got an extra one in case I can't find one of them.

James Brown 01-25-2011 09:20 AM

It's a different world from mine that these GT's live in. If someone gave me one, I doubt I could afford to service it beyond the normal things (gas, oil, belts, water...). This makes it a true "super car".
Oh and the Blue Point calipers, are around 30 bucks. The HF ones are a better deal for the same tool.

And I am assuming it says Blue-Point. It might be Blue-Po.

mossguy 01-25-2011 10:45 AM

Even better, the HF caliper comes with a battery cover!

Best,
Tom

Laneco 01-25-2011 12:56 PM

Wow that is one crazy looking transaxle! On one side, it appears to have an inlet for cooling? Does this have a remote cooler? Not sure what that is at all, but I am sure it's expensive!

The Chinese know to copy the good tools :)

I work in a machine shop where all measurement tools get calibrated annually (at the minimum). The cheap stuff is usually just as accurate but doesn't have the same feel.

lane912 01-25-2011 05:06 PM

i prefer the pelican crowd-
that said, I would tie a christmas tree to that too just because.....

How can you buy a car and not know how much it cost?:confused::confused:

Rich folks have never made any sense to me. It's like money means nothing to them...

Thanks for posting this!

Schumi 01-25-2011 05:53 PM

I've compared those $10 chinese calipers to my $110 set of Mitutoyos... Many times they read well within a normal person's repeatability when using digital calipers. The worst ones I've had are no more few thousandths of an inch off.

He is measuring the clutch life. I think the cheap calipers are OK for that.

"Whilst off from the shop, I got a call on the tele and proceeded to put a tyre off the road. What I though was a brilliant exercise in car control ended up causing the car to lose control and total the car crashing into a petro station. Off to buy another, Cheers."
