So who gave Creed Taylor my phone number?
If you saw the thread title & said: Who? Well, you're not alone.
I got a vm from this guy & he had bought one of our receivers & wanted somebody to hook it up at his place in Florida. I didn't return the call, but I sent an email to my local dealer to handle. Creed phoned back this afternoon & I answered. I still didn't know him from Adam. I told him a dealer would be in touch . . . bye. I assumed he had bought online & local storefront dealers aren't thrilled to help an internet non-customer. He called back an hour later - vm again - with his email & to tell me he hadn't heard from the dealer yet. Then the dealer called me ecstatic. "Do you know who he is?" "No, no idea" "He is the founder of CTI Records & one of the most famous jazz producers . . ." "Oh. I had no idea . . ." Wiki: Creed Taylor CTI I guess I suck at celebrity recognition & stalking . . . Ian

Creed Taylor has also been criticized for homogenizing jazz for the commercial masses (e.g. Bob James, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Grover Washington, etc.)
Not saying it's terrible. Some albums were brilliant, but many were on the easy listening side, again not necessarily bad. However, the music style these musicians were asked to play didn't explore the music they were capable of playing, but it brought jazz to the masses and that was a good thing to accomplish. Creed Taylor also produced one of my all0-time favorite guitarists, Eric Gale. Eric died too young, but he was a gifted musician.
