Ducati dudes - Anybody know of an alternative to stock Monster 900 oil drain plug?

1996 M900 Monster - When I got this bike the oil had just been changed. When it was time to change it again, I found the drain plug was stripped. Fortunately I was able to break it loose with vise grips. Seems I recall reading that certain car drain plugs will fit, but can't track down that info now. Anybody know the answer?

DIMPLEŽ OIL PLUGS ANNOUNCES CUSTOM MAGNETIC PLUGS FOR DUCAT

https://www.tpoparts.com/cat093/index.php?route=product/product&path=43&product_id=10

...and yeah, I talk to John @ Ducsea

Seems odd the plug stripped. I would guess someone didn't use the crush washer and cranked it down to keep it from weeping stressing the threads. I would rather the plug fail than the case.

Good luck!

You have a steel plug threaded into what I assume is an aluminum sump casting and the threads in the steel plug are stripped? That doesn't sound right... Have you had a close look at the casting?

Threads are fine. Hex head on the drain plug was stripped. I assume whoever did the last oil change destroyed it when they overtightened it or they used the wrong size hex wrench.

Check with yoyodyne. He's got a lot of tasty aftermarket bits for Ducati.

I think this will work for you and is likely to be much better quality than the OEM pot-metal POS drain plug.

Mine stripped out too, and I always used the proper 10mm hex wrench. You were lucky to get it out with a vise grip. Mine had to be drilled, hammered, chiseled out

I think the spec is M22 1.5 . The thread on those posted look courser. Once I actually get it out of the bike I can be sure. It's a '98 model, not a '96 as I originally posted. After more digging I'm thinking the spec matches some Dodge trucks and BMWs.

Believe me, after reading some horror stories, I was thrilled when it came loose.

you can take a 10mm allen and Jb weld into the hole let it cure then use a wrench or socket on the allen to remove it
Note this is how you could remove one if the allen is stripped
