What I can't really stand is when you hear an older band play a fantastic older song and they just slaughter it live. They add in a 30 piece orchestra, 12 backup singers and play it entirely different. I want to hear the song how it was played on the damn record. How I've heard and loved it for decades.

Funny someone put Peart up there, because Rush prides themselves to make the songs as accurate as possible live, as it is on the albums. And they succeed every time they step up on that stage. As for Peart's solo, it's a living breathing work of art that has evolved over decades. Some of the same elements you heard back in '81 are still in it. Brilliant.

He's up there for sure. But if you really want to get specific, the only drummer that tops the pile as the "God" of modern drumming is Buddy Rich. I don't think any drummer worth their salt will argue with that one

Bonham was a genius, pure and simple. Neil Pert could mop the stage with him in the category called "Technical Merit," but Bonham was a genius for the ages. Comparing him with Pert is like comparing the songrwiting team of Lennon-McCartney with Stanley-Simmons.

This is a reason I don't like Rush actually. When I see someone play live, I want something beyond the recording, not a "cover band" playing things note for note. No matter how well they do it.

Peart is a great drummer, but I'm not into the 40 drum setup. I'd rather hear what someone can do with kick, snare and hi hat. And yes, Rich is the gold standard, but frankly I think that Carlock could easily give Rich a run for his money. Buddy would be pissed as hell about it too...

Love Buddy, Alias, the Palmers, Bruford, Peart, et al. but this guy is my fave - by far.



Agree and disagree about live Rush. Some of their stuff is too complex for alot of live improve - lots of layered studio production too. They do try sometimes as on Exit Stage Left on which most every track is better and different from the studio version. It woul be nice if they would completely change a songs arrangement once in a while though - ala Zep, King Crimson, etc.

Anyway, Gavin is the best!

I agree, and so could a ton of other drummers out there. My point is that all of these drummers were most likely inspired by Buddy, or inspired by someone who was inspired by Buddy. He is the "root", the "source". The absolute pinnacle of his craft, and inspired others to go faster and get creative.

Course Buddy would probably tell you different, since he was inspired by men like Chick Webb, Gene Krupa and Jo Jones

Nope. Most drummers don't take their solo anywhere - instead it is an excuse to show off how fast they are. If you listen to a variety of Carlock solos, they tend to go in different directions and actually are musical.

Combine that with the fact that he backs up a band with an incredible feel and groove and you have a seriously great drummer.

Music is the one thing in life where I have tried really, really hard, but been a complete and total failure. I can usually acquire at least a middling level of proficiency in what I really try at, but not so with music. Because it's so out of reach, I've always admired anyone who can play!

Carlock is damn good, thanks for introducing him. I also agree with the solo thing, an example is Joey Jordison of Slipknot. Yea he's really fast but can't play a decent solo to save his life. Anything you hear in his solos is usually stuff he plays in the songs.

If I had to pick a soloist that really gives me goose bumps, I'd have to go with Terry Bozzio.
